Brand new laptop, going to run Linux - thoughts?
I have this beaut new laptop (have not even booted it to windows) and loaded the Elementary OS (which is really quite stunning!) so my question/s?
Is it better to run Reaper natively on Linux, and if so best way to migrate all my Sonar stuff over - OR - Run Sonar using PlayonLinux (essentially a gui frontend for WINE) meaning all my existing plugs (especially Sampletank4 and Addictive Drums 2) will be able to be used? -OR- Just install Reaper and use whatever linux native plugs are available (having a $ cost is fine!) Thanks |

The native Linux version works quite well for me. My newest project uses Linux plugins exclusively, although I have all my Windows plugins working in WINE and bridged using LinVST.

If you run the native Linux version of REAPER and want to run Windows VST plugins, then you will need LinVST. It provides the bridge between Windows plugins running in WINE and REAPER running in Linux.

It is more stable using linux plugs only. Be ready to rollback by using timeshift or similar in linux before digging to deep. The more layer you add (wine) the more it tends to break at least that is my experience.
I also eventually get a stable installation with wine/linvst by choosing my steps and plugins/progs more carefully. |

Is there a step by step guide anywhere to actually get it installed? I looked at git hub and was immediately overwhelmed hahaha! |

If you are finding LinVST too much of a hassle then try Airwave, it does the same and even has a GUI to help you with the conversion. All you'll need is a folder to place the converted plugin files, then add the folder path to your Reaper and re-scan your plugins.
Some plugins will not work but most will work. just make sure you don't use too many of them as they tend to consume more resources than native Linux plugins. |

thanks! Yeah pretty much the only VST's (windows) I'll be using will be Sampletank and Addictive drums, oh and maybe a couple of the really good ST effects - compressors and reverbs
