Reproducable hang (FIXED)
just found this by accident (and like most of the times, as i just found a good sound):
just doubleclick a midi-item while recording several times (maybe just click very fast to reproduce it).

do you have the midi-editor placed outside and side-by-side with the reaper main-window? otherwise you can't click so fast i think.
i have the midi-editor on my second display, so it's always opened (next to the mainwindow).
i found the bug while recording modwheel (midi-overdub) in loop-mode and doubleclicked the midi-item (screenshot) to refresh the midi-editor. maybe it's bit faster to reproduce while looping and recording, but i've just tested it again (before posting here) and i also get it to hang just by clicking maybe more then 10 times extremely fast on the same midi-item (while playback - even with loop/repeat disabled) ...

I tried it with the midi editor in a sep window off to the side, and docked.. hmm... does it matter what vsti you are using?
I managed to get it to crash by editing notes in the midi editor while I overdub record, maybe that'll help...

yeah, just tried it in a clean (one empty track with one midi-item) and can't reproduce it now
maybe you can try it in a project with some load on your pc? my problem-project has ~35% usage here ...

hmm so it hangs rather than crashes, right?
I can't read the german of the error dialog.. what does it say?

yes, it hangs. no crash. the dialog says "the program doesn't react anymore ...).
i've also removed all fx from the project to test, and this looked like it solved the problem.
now it seems all the forced hangs (~20) killed the rme-driver (reaper doesn't play anymore). have to restart my machine ...

can you try 1.46 and see if that has the same problem? if it doesn't, see if 1.47 does. I think it may be the drum map mode causing it... (querying the VST for note names etc)
you can also try this reaper_midi which may help as well. http://reaper.fm/files/reaper162-mf2.zip

so, with the latest versions... does it only hang if MIDI data is coming in, or does it hang either way?

ok. i'll send you a link to the project file too (but maybe you can't get it to hang because of the missing plugins - surge, shortcircuit and voxengo tempodelay) ...
but you have doubleclick set to open the midi-editor?

ahh, so even without doing overdub /etc, just while playing back?
And you're not closing the window, just opening and reopening it over and over again?

although reaper does show no (0%) cpu-usage in taskmanager while ist hangs after clicking a midi-item ...

the hang happens not on the first opening, but on some subsequent doubleclick, right?

try this. go to prefs/editing/mouse and set doubleclick to set loop selection to the item.. then open the item in the midi editor via menu, then go doubleclick crazy on the item and see what that does =)
