To be perfectly honest, I had not even noticed the L and R indicator on the VU meter frame until you mentioned it. In any case, it was only a suggestion, I wasn't complaining.

pattste ...np did not read it as a complaint... 'tis all good...

there's nothing wrong with ideas being tossed about...

who knows... it may evolve further....

so hey, don't get me wrong... I know I worked fairly hard on this to get the graphics happy... but I'm pretty sure that was easy compared to the programming that d.bop did... then again, I like doing graphics and he likes doing code...
I guess I should not speak for him, yet at the same time I'm sensitive to putting any more burdens on him... he's been soooo great about all this.

so com'on now... you started this perfectionist thingy... and apparently maybe it would be an improvement... so you might be on to something... but now it's up to you to come back with something..

I've got to go digging out cases now and looking for a good example

I don't think that you'll have to bitmap stack it if d.bop can manipulate graphics as well as I think he can. All he(/you) needs to do is:

(1) create a blank core and gap as if you had removed the bar (ie copy/clone the grey core and the dark gap over where the edge of the coil bar currently obstructs), and...

(2) create an obstruction mask for the pivot bar and (possibly) spring just above centre of it, then...

(3) draw the pixels for the coil bar over the core and gap, but under the pivot and spring mask for the same rotation function that the meter needle. It'll be little more than drawing a second, fatter, copper and nickel-coloured, mostly-masked needle...

You'll only see the edges of that bar rise on the left of the pivot towards full deflection and on the right of the pivot towards zero deflection -just a few pixels of the end of a rectangle rotating at each end, but it'll look like a real analogue moving-coil meter instead of a (very good) moving needle over a (also very good) meter background render.

It's hard to visualise without knowing what you are looking at. You see pixels, but I see individual components (I took things like this to bits to see how they worked from about age 10), so I know what should move and what shouldn't. I remember a college assignment where we had to show torque figures (micro-Newtons) for currents drawn and numbers of coil turns for these things, uber geeky electrical engineering principles

I've found a pic on the web for a simple moving coil meter:

Here you can see the coil, which looks like a bar from a front perspective, with the spring that it works against in front (yellow). The coil here is also perpendicular to the needle, but not at such an angle from vertical as in your VUdu meter (-45deg to +45deg).

The pivot in this representation is held by two arms extending from the baseplate, but in your meter it is under a shiny horizontal screwed bar, which actually masks most of the coil on its rotational path.

Your meter...

EMI console VU meter...

You can see the coil poking out from under this and over the core and gap towards the right on your rendering -as it would be in the rest position similar to the diagram below it. In fact this last diagram just above is a good orientation pic for your particular meter. Luckily the zero-adjustment screw and case mask any coil movement below the pivot bar

Have a look at what I've posted above and ask any questions if you want to. It's your meter, so it's up to you how far you want to go, and I'll not be offended if this is a step overboard for reality's sake or too much extra work for you and d.bop, but I'll help you all the way if you want to make the coil bar move.

Good luck, I'm here to help

But. It's here!
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/21184/VuDu%20VU%20Meter.zip

Included is a single track version, a multi track version, and an excellent guide written by hopi to get you up to speed on how it works.

I won't be able to support this plugin much, if it all, but do let me know if there are any showstoppers. I'll try my best to fix any issues as soon as I can!

Thanks and have a great day everyone!
Dustin
Nice! But why are the L and R meter placed under each other and not side by side? I would prefer side by side.

Not a criticism, a suggestion for consideration. Peak Hold Refresh. 3secs perhaps.

Mainly because thats what the original poster asked for and with multiple meters side by side plugin would get very wide

I'm so sad. I have been following this thread since the beginning, but somehow I missed that this would be a Windows plugin. I was sad when I sat down to download the plugin and noticed this.

I still thrilled that this came out of the discussion here on the Reaper Forums. Great job guys.

oh sorry it is only windows... I don't think d.bop does mac plugin code...
however, IF you can find someone who does, perhaps we can supply them with some head starts...

for Planet Nine to discuss:

Ok lets talk about all this:

In the youtube video, I see two things:
1- the tiny rectangular 'bar' that moves in the black arc just above the spring.
2- that the 'base' of the needle, which the gray part of the bottom of the needle and which is a bent part to allow the needle to be over the spring also move...

Now in the graphics I used and that you also show, the spring is over that part of the needle... [and I can't tell you how much PS work I did to get that right!]

So really I'm seeing two different mechanisms ... one in the youtube and a diff one in the still image...

Hello Hopi, I'm in the thick of it this weekend, can I get back to you in the week? I did a mechanism-blanked-out version of the bigger meter picture and I'd like to post that and explain it.

Hopefully will have email and hosting back up by then, too.

Edit: I think the needle and countereight are connected to the coil frame under the pivot, but the spring is above it (probably directly connected to the needle or counterweight).

Sure pnine... whenever you can is fine with me...

I see after all this time of this being in the general area, some overzealous mods moved it to tips and tricks... which seems to me to be a very odd place for it.... Well whatever... I'll keep a watch for it here.

Not bad. I'll suggest a few more things. Not to be a kill-joy, but .. because this looks so good that I get the feeling of 'it needs so little, to be so much better'

Pan Law Settings
Mono button
Pan control

With the pan law set to -3 in your daw - the best internal compromise between stereo<>mono - you won't see on the meter the same proportions that you hear, because the meter will be located on a prefader insert slot. Pan law settings for visual correction only though, not audial.
Being on an insert slot is also the reason you'll need a mono button on it which will compensate the meter reading according to pan law when summing to mono. Reaper's own mono button won't do that for the meter, because the meter is ahead of it in the chain. With a -3 pan law, the sides will be lower in volume than the center.
Pan control will be a good addition. If you pan the master output (for temporary checks, tests and stuff) it won't be reflected on the meter, since the meter is an a pre pan-control insert.

I also support the addition of having the L/R windows horizontal.
Nice work
