I'm looking for options for a laptop with high fidelity audio playback?

Thanks

All built-in sound cards are pretty much the same.

If you want better, get an external USB interface with better specs.

I'm not sure. There are basically 3 "specs" that define sound quality: Noise, distortion, and frequency response. You can also get slight playback-speed errors, but that's rarely an issue with digital audio unless you have perfect pitch, or you if are trying to sync a backing-track while recording a new track, etc.

Sometimes there is audible noise. But, if you don't hear noise, a "better" soundcard/interface is unlikely to sound better. Almost any soundcard/soundchip will have audibly-flat frequency response and no audible distortion.

-------------------------------------------------------
Recording is a different matter... I don't recommend using a laptop's built-in mic, or the mic input on a laptop or any consumer soundcard for serious recording.

the problem are the speakers, not the soundcard. and of course the amp that drives the speakers.

always dreamed of a laptop with 1/4" and xlr ports...built in. well actually it's a multi-touch tablet in the dream now.

but yea, we're pretty much in the golden age of recording these days. now we just need to come up with something worth recording.
