Default Web interface via ad-hoc wireless network (Windows)?

Hi.

For live keyboard gigs, with a MIDI-connected laptop running Reaper and various Kontakt libraries, I'd like to have an android tablet running the Reaper web interface (or, most likely, Jon Tidey's ReaperWRB interface) so that I can trigger custom actions to select patches, split and layers set up in Reaper.

I've sorted out the Reaper tracks, config and a suite of actions to do what I want BUT, in a live situation, I don't want to connect the laptop & tablet to a public wifi (I don't want to have to carry a router around with me either) so I've been looking at setting up an ad-hoc wireless network on the laptop that I can connect the tablet to, in a peer-to-peer fashion, as it were.

I've managed to create and launch an adhoc wireless network ('hostednetwork') called ReaperWeb on the laptop (Windows 8.1) and have successfully connected my tablet to that network.

However, when I try to configure the Reaper web browser interface in Prefs/Control Surface Settings, it returns an error message 'error fetching IP' (that's not the exact wording, but you get the gist)

It seems the laptop is blind to ad-hoc ReaperWeb network profile that I've set up - I certainly can't see it in the list of wireless networks available.

I feel that I am close to the solution but I am now stumped and need some kind help.

I'm very definitely not a network expert so I was hoping that their might be a Windows network expert reading this who can advise OR if there's anyone out there who's already achieved what I am trying to, and can share their advice/config.

Thanks

Can't you just use a cable ? Seems like much more save than wireless.

pretty sure you need an external router for this.

If the ad-hoc network is truly working it should be completely doable but would require manual setup instead of using the reaper helper domain. The whole point of an ad-hoc network is for machines to be able to talk to each other without a formal router in the picture. At minimum you should have to manually enter the IP address of the machine running reaper (on the remote machine) and make sure the port chosen has an allow incoming rule in the firewall on the machine running reaper.

I am pretty sure that "android tablet" as mentioned in OP does not have wire network (aka Ethernet) connection... (well, maybe posible using some USB-LAN interface attached, but...)

What Karbo said...

+ You also need ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the Reaper machine enabled, unless you configure everything with static ip's.

Enabling ICS will make the reaper machine hand out ip's through DHCP, just like a router.
