Just a side question...

This is obviously a very well recorded session... But...

Is what's happening on the room track what people are aiming for when they mic the room? It's awfully muddy, actually distorted, and I don't hear much of a room as much as I hear just a wide view of the drums. I guess if it was me I'd call this the crush, but it wouldn't be distorted like that.

Am i wrong?

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Hey guys, Dave here

As you might know, since last year I've done all by myself. It was all right, but since my goal has always been to expand this project, I've come to the realization that I had to look for help.
That's why I want to officially welcome Martin Madero on board as my partner in crime! We've secretelly been working together for the past 1 or 2 months trying to come up with new ideas and now is the time to make it official!

Since I'm now not alone anymore, there will be more content. More specifically, mixing livestreams and videos on YouTube. More info will come very shortly, but this is just a little sneak peak of what we're going to bring on the table this year.

If you have any questions, you can also now write to Martin (or to me, as usual).

Another thing... I would take a look here and here on Monday, just saying

Great news !!!

I'm not sure I'll have time to participate this month, but I did have some time to do some GUI work.
So, here's Stillwell's Fairly Childish Stereo Compressor/Limiter GUI:

Downloadable in the stash.
The vu meter are brand new and need testing.
Vu meter balistics is ajustable.

Feedback appreciated.

Also, Dave, I'm updating "Dave Keehl's Awesome PlugSuite" as well as "Stillwell's 1175 compressor" with the new vu meter, I'm still waiting for some feedback on this one.

Thanks Martin, I DLed the tracks and when I checked them out, it sounded like the singer was recorded with a tight gate, but I see he actually sings that way.

Overall the tracks are pretty muddy, lots of cleaning up to do. I hope I have time to do this and give it a shot.

Kind of a nice funky groove.

Wow! I had no idea this type of thing even existed. Looks like finding Reaper, and participating in the Forums, is really going to increase my learning curve!

This is a whole new set of goals for me to reach. This first try is either going to be a train wreck or something to scare the feral cats.

Here goes...

MacFizz I've noticed in my plugin that if I go on a slider or knob while dragging another one, then it changes the value. Let me explain.

Imagine I'm dragging a slider called I don't know... let's call it volume. While dragging "volume", the mouse hovers the slider "output". The bug is that the as soon as the mouse hovers "output", it starts changing its value too.

Hope I was clear enough

I can't wait until I'm up to speed again.. I haven't mixed a band since back in my C.E.P. 1.0 days. This set of tracks has been an awesome way to get right back into it.

So, not wanting to break any unknown protocols or go off whining, but it is proper to mention, here, about some the issues? (i.e. horn tracks labeled backwards, and as mentioned above by others, etc...)
Is this a test?!
Were these little snags 'engineered' or is this like Fight Club...
Anyways at the very least this will definitely help me learn my way through Reaper and wipe the tarnish off my skill set.

And most of all - It was incredibly fun and rewarding to stay up till early in the morning with the project. Felt so good to be doing this again!

Looking forward to the challenges ahead!

Yep, crystal clear.
SWIPE's sliders don't behave well with my knobs apparently.
I'll write my own sliders in the next weeks to fix all that.

I'm liking the song, but the Troy guitar part is killing me.

OK, I won't be able to make my own slider routine for now, so I've made some ajustments to fix that particular matter.
Now sliders behave nicely with knobs.
I've updated your plugin as well as Martin's.
I've added Stillwell's Express Bus Compressor to the collection:

It needs testing, especially the side chain.
Also, I've updated the channel strip to fix major performance issues on some systems. Seems to work smoothly now.
Everything can be found in the stash.

K this is the first contest I've done where I'm actually going to be done in time... Forgive me, I make punk rock records, I have no idea about LUFS 😂 and I don't want to be disqualified because of levels...

There's a Waves plugin that measures that stuff but I know we're not supposed to use anything but Reaper and JS... What is everyone else using to check their levels?

Use SWS extension Loudness...
It analyze the selected track and you can then normalise to whatever value you want.

As you're new in here, would you mind testing a few nice JSFX HERE ?

Thanks... I've already submitted it... I used the Waves plugin and it seemed fine, then I removed it from the project... Hopefully that doesn't disqualify me... I'll use the SWS thing next time...

New to Reaper and its forums - what's to keep people from voting multiple times? Or is it an honor system kind of thing?

I see the IP address of each person who votes, so if I see double votes I simply delete all of them but the last one already happened a few times!

One question to clarify the rules: I see that you can't glue anything or add any recordings. Does that mean that you can't touch the audio tracks at all? For example if I wanted to cut a bit of the guitar solo, sprinkle a few of the runs at different transition points, half-speed and octave a vocal somewhere (not that this song calls for any of that stylistically, but as an example)...is that kind of thing allowed? Or is this supposed to be a "This song is DONE done, just mix it"?

The rules say "no new recordings"... If editing is not allowed, then the rules should be more clear, because I did a lot of editing and that would disqualify me...

I think that the intent is not to create new audio files that others do not have.
This allows us to download all projects and hear and see how others achieved their mix

I did quite a bit of cutting (but no gluing) on this project.

Yes, I totally agree... We should be able to do whatever we want as long as the project loads with the source files and no commercial plugs...
