Default If anyone's interested: a new ReaDrums

Decided to simplify for easier customization and quicker workflow. For Live heads, think of this as Reaper's Impulse, only without the sample-changing bug. :-)

Eight channels, chromatic from notes 36 - 43, stereo master outs. Expand as you go; I find this easier than starting with a huge template, personally.

Place the file in the Track Templates folder, inside your Reaper folder in: Documents and Settings/user/Aplication Data/Reaper. Simply preview your one-shots through Reaper's Media Explorer and drag them right into the sampler!

36 - Kick
37 - Snare
38 - Perc 1
39 - Perc 2
40 - Perc 3
41 - Perc 4
42 - HH CL
43 - HH OP (with "obey note-off messages" for pseudo-choke)

Thanks and enjoy!

10/19/07 New updated template:
* Revised the instrument order (still fully customizable of course) to be more like Live's Impulse, with Kick and Snare at the beginning and Hats at the end. This facilitates playing beats on a 4x4 pad controller, as K/S is left hand and HH's are right hand.
* Named the samplers to their instruments (new RPR feature!) which greatly enhances workflow.
* FYI: Schwa's excellent Midi Note Namer is no longer required for a drum map, as the Sampl0matic now shows the names of the samples used in the midi editor (another new RPR feature)!

08/30/09 New updated template!
* Readrums is now "racked" in a Folder Track with output tracks for the samplers all assigned and ready to go. Note that there is only one output track for the Hats, as they'd usually be processed the same. If seperate processing is desired, simply add a track into the folder and route it accordingly.

Glad you like it guys...Beezelbubba, what was the problem before?

One of the coolest aspects of this (imho) is the ability to drag-n-drop from the Media Explorer. Most other simple samplers out there (like Sam!Solo for example) require you to navigate through their built-in explorer, which is usualy more work and of course doesn't allow for previewing.

Thanks Jamester,

I hadn't tried your previous incarnation, but I decided to give this one a go and it works great. As you say, the drag-and-drop capability makes it nice for setup and/or auditioning different samples.

Once again, thanks for the contribution. It's just another example of this great and wonderful Reaper community and aren't we all just the BEST!!! (hahahaha, gag, choke...)

Cheers

same here. i haven't tried your previous stuff but this is useful. it would be nice if samplomatic5000 could use a note's note-on to trigger another note's note-off (for hihats).

Good idea!

The other option (easiest option, probably) is to only use one HH sampler which obeys note-off, and then just use an open HH sample on it. That way a short hit would give you closed, and a long hit would give you open. (I'm just used to using different samples for open & closed, personally)

Cheers Argee and Brainwreck, thanks for checking it out! =)

Default This is so cool ...

... that I would DEFINITELY like to include it in the next User Guide update.

Is there any chance that there might be a permanewnt URL where it can be downloaded from?

Is the link you have given us here likely to stay? Or is there another?

Thanks.

Yes, actually it is just attached to the post; it is a recognized attachment (how cool is that?)

There is a known bug where the sound of the sample changes when put into Impulse. Part of it may have to do with the sample's length. Long samples mess it up or something? It is well known in the Live community. Funny, I never noticed it for the longest time, and then one day I was like, "what the..?" and sure enough!

I'm hoping they improve Impulse next version, it's due for a refreshing. They need to fix that bug, double the pads, make a graphical wav like Simpler and make all pad-outs rackable, imho. But I digress... =)

Ahh, cheers for that info Jamester.

I just wanna say, your readrum is way cool! I loaded her up with some Deftones drum samples, what a sick drum machine... I'm really impressed.

Great work!

Default I agree with Nicholas

Maybe a page of unsupported third party add ons and add ins with Art's scripts, Loser's and TerryW's plugs and all the other swanky add ons. The page could be editable for adding links to other stuff that goes well with Reapers such as the keyboard mapping stuff.

Hi ho hi ho.

Hi ho hi ho.
Yes, that would be wonderful ... a page on the Reaper web site for third party downloads.

Excellent idea!

I put the link in my sig, just to make it more convenient to find/grab...especially for newcomers who might not find the thread. A stickied thread of all the add-ons would definitely be the best option, and really show the spirit of this community and the "Reaper Way"! =)

Actually I sliced up the drums from the start of In The Fur (drum intro), and extracted the kick/snare etc...so it sounds exactly like that.

"Redrum" is Reason's drum machine.

"ReaDrums" is my tongue-in-cheek Reaperized version, which technically should be perfectly legal.

Default Help geting started

Jamester, I am a pretty non-MIDI guy so I was wondering if you could give me a little help.

I was able to download your template as instructed and was able to open a track, put a midi track in and then assign samples in the readrums window.

I can click on the piano keys in the midi editor but I cannot figure out what goes where...

It seems like my snare is c# but my kick is on every key.

Is there any additional info on how to make this work? Maybe I need midi help.

Any chance anyone has a RPP file that has ReaDrums on one track and a Midi beat on the other?

jdier I recommend this Readrums project template by teej:

http://www.cockos.com/forum/showpost...6&postcount=37

Once opened you can also save it as a track template; easy for loading inside a project. Teej's template even comes with some nice samples so you'll be ready to go & see how it works.

jdier:

One useful thing is to set the Midi Editor to "Show Named Notes" instead of "Piano Roll". this will give the note number on every key, making it easy to see what's where. I set it up to simply be chromatic from note number 36.

HTH, thanks for checking it out! :-)

Here's a "pro tip" for anybody using ReaDrums:

To get around the lack of a "clear sample" button (without having to set back to default, and reconfigure everything), simply make a muted "dummy clip", and name it something like "Empty". Keep this handy, at the top of your drum samples folder.

Since Sampl0matic can only hold one sample at a time, dragging in this empty clip will effectively "clear" the sampler, while retaining all the settings!

Nice Alex, can't wait to check it out! :-)

Allow me to return the favor; I came across this thanks to Digital Aura at the P5 forum...a massive collection of drum hits, ranging from acoustic stuff to all kinds of classic beatboxes:

http://www.passage.nl/passage/person...b!OpenDocument

The link's at the bottom; the "click here" at the top just takes you down there immediately. Either way...

Pro Tip #2: Reverse Hits

One thing I've wished SamplOmatic had was a proper Reverse button. One thing I've wished Reaper could do was instantly Render/Save a clip just by dragging it into the Media Explorer, ala Ableton Live.

The workaround actually isn't too bad:

Drag the hit you want to flip into the track view, so it creates its own track. Select the clip and then right-click, "Reverse item as new take." Since we can't now drag the new clip back into the Media Explorer or into the SamplOmatic (bummer!), we have to properly Render it. Simply highlight the clip, Solo it or Mute any other tracks, and Render/Save to the folder that contains the original hit, with the name of that hit and "Rev" or something.

You've got a cool new reversed hit for later use, and you can now drag it into ReaDrums from the Explorer! While there are a number of steps to this, once you get the hang of it the process is quite quick.

Default This just in!.....

I'm not sure if this is news to anyone except me, but...

Now that Reaper can "rename FX instance (F2)" in the FX explorer window, if your using Jamester's ReaDrums template, you can name all the instances of Reasamplomatic5000 to their respective drums/cymbals/whatever and save them with your track template for easy ID the next time.....nice!!

...and by the way, thanks again Jamester. I use the ReaDrums template all the time.

Thanks for the head's-up, that makes for a big improvement in useability, especially for bigger kits.

Actually, just do the "reverse item as new take", then hit Ctrl+F2, copy the filename, close the media properties, hit undo (removing the reversed take), then go to reasamplomatic and paste the filename in...

Hmmm, how exactly does the pasting work? I can right-clk on the Browse title bar and choose Paste, but nothing happens.

Edit: Ah got it - you have to click the Browse button and paste in the dialog! Indeed, Reaper saves the reversed item as a new take in the default audio folder, just like it says. (I would still recommend moving that newly reversed hit back into its original folder for proper archival; but then this would make the Samplomatic "lose" the sample, wouldn't it?)

I suppose being able to copy/paste into the sampler is as close as we've got (at this point) to being able to d-n-d directly from the track into the instrument.

Thanks for the tip!

How to tell Reaper to include the samples in the project directory, so that the whole project can be opened on another computer?

This has been disussed/debated here before; while there is the option to copy or move all media into the project directory, it will not include the samples used by your virtual instruments.

Jamster... I was wondering, what is the CPU hit of a ReaDrums setup that will hold the same umber of samples as say Poise or Virtuadrum?

cheers
