Default My way of using reaper. ( Minus sticky Edit Cursor BS, plus ME Magic)

hiya.

START TLDR:
Uncouple the "edit cursor" from most mouse actions and
use the script ( by FEEDTHECAT) to focus the ME where
you double click on the Midi Item.
END TLDR

This script has changed my work flow from a royal pain in the ass to AMAZING.

Latest script (Mod2) :

https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...2&postcount=72

Note:
Can now open midi item where you double click while track is playing,
previous version could not do this.

This script by FEEDTHECAT (Mod) :

https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...8&postcount=52

Note:
Opens midi item where you double click on it. That point is centred in the ME window.
Does NOT use the "Edit Cursor" to focus the ME window. GAME CHANGER.

Intro:
I have had to explain how I use reaper to a few people
recently and this really was challenging. It's not wrong
to use reaper in a non standard way. It is the way of
the enquiring mind to forge their own work flow.

Note: I try to keep reaper as stock standard as possible.
I do not like fiddling with under the hood too much or
adding scripts etc. BUT.... sometimes...

START MY WAY:
The "edit cursor" curse. ( for me. ) :

I have pretty much killed "move edit cursor" on most
mouse modifiers default actions.

Therefore I only move the edit cursor by clicking on
the time lime.
This is my hill that will die on.
Time selection has "move edit cursor" removed etc.

So the "edit cursor" does not move when I use "time selection",
or "double click on media item" etc etc.
IT only moves when I click in the time line ruler.

Opening the "midi Item" in the "midi editor" :

This was a real problem as reaper displays the
LAST VIEW of the midi item you had open then close.
It meant that if had I looked at the beginning of a
midi item in the ME , then when I go to inspect the
same Midi Item but in a different position the ME
displays the LAST VIEW, not the place where I double clicked to invoke the ME.

This was a major work flow disrupter.

FEEDTHECAT has a script that solved this.
( note to self: add link to the script at some point )

So I can park the "Edit cursor" at the beginning of
a bar of midi. hit the space bar to start play back
and review the bar. If I want to edit the bar I can
double click on the bar, at the point I want to focus
on, edit it and close it. If I decide to edit a different
place in the bar I just do the same again.
Everytime I double click on the Midi Item , to invoke
the ME, I am focused AT WHERE I DOUBLE CLICKED. This is how I roll.
END MY WAY.

WRAP UP.
So there you go.

I'm gonna park this here and see what people think.
There is no "wrong way" to do things, just "ways".
However, I think the way the ME does not focus in the
way it does in FEEDTHECCATS script is just
a bad design decision by the devs.
It is what it is and i do not see it changing any time soon.
Most people never deal with this "feature" so yep,
it's a thing hiding in plain sight.

I hope that how you use reaper is working for you.

Cheers have a nice day. :-)

Default Video Footage.

hmm....

I am thinking a video of what I am doing and how I do it is probably a lot more digestible
for the masses.

Of course it's not exactly rocket science and a lot of users will not pay attention however for posterity.... it pays to document things.

It might inspire someone.... and that is a positive outcome.

Maybe next week. I'm going to the beach. To record some video. For a video.

When I get back I will be back in the studio wrangling notes.

:- )
