Default Periodical sound freeze

Hey,

About every minute my sound is going crazy for about ten seconds. It sounds as if there's a bitcrusher applied for a moment. Or as if the bitdepth drops by 99% for a while.

Next to the fact that the sound is really messed up, I also notice slight increases in CPU usage. (see screens 1 and 2 below). When everything is alright, the CPU usage is about 2% (FX CPU: 5.6%), when the sound gets fucked up, the CPU usage is about 16.7% (FX CPU: 21.2%).

I have tried increasing latency but without any result. It actually seems that somehow smaller latency gives the better result. I even used a buffer size of 512, with firewire driver latency set to moderate, and still had a very shitty sound.

My soundcard is a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, external firewire device.

The weird fucking thing is that everything sound perfectly alright, its just about every minute that I get 10 seconds of horrible sounds coming straight from hell.
What is weird as well is that the recorded audio sounds absolutely fine, it's just when I'm recording a track.

I also tried disabling all VST's, using only 'safe and trustable'ones (from reaper itself, and some plugin from Poulin - guitar people will know this one)

My audio setup used to work really well some time ago, I cannot recall when this problem started to happen. I have barely anything installed on this PC.

Try updating the soundcard drivers first.
then check your latency for some driver causing a spike in latency... http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
or
