Updated the WIKI page to point to contain more general links to the proper resources, i.e. FFMPEG libraries and VLC.

Default HOW DO YOU INSTALL VLC AND FFmpg in REAPER????

I've downloaded the prescribed files but have been unsuccessful in getting Reaper to display video content of any kind. I must be doing something wrong.

How should these downloaded files be loaded into Reaper????? [Win7 / Win10]

I do it this way:

Place the .dll files into the "\REAPER\UserPlugins" folder.

The "UserPlugins" is a sub-folder in your main Reaper install-folder.

The FFMPEG install instructions for Mac in this thread are not correct.

1 - Homebrew
Install Homebrew from terminal with the script on the website.
The install takes a couple min and might look like it's not doing anything for a while in the middle.

Then brew install ffmpeg

Thanks to cfillion for the tip.

2 - Manual

Extract ffmpeg-4.2.2-macos64-shared.zip
open the bin folder and copy all files

use finder "go to folder" usr/local
create a folder named lib if you don't have one
paste the ffmpeg files

After successful install you'll see

========== ffmpeg/libav ==========
ffmpeg/libav DLL decoder v58.54.100

Loaded from: /usr/local/lib/libavcodec.58.dylib

Hello, I got .mp4 files playing with lag both A/V,
so I spent time updating codecs etc, but no luck.

Now I see waves are displayed wrongly, but when I zoom in, they change to the audible position. Did not help erasing those wave graphic files however ...

Jon, I know that, but since it is only in zoomed out waveform it is a bug in Reaper!

The free version of Vordio has a GUI tool to replace audio in a video without transcoding. It works on Mac & Windows. It basically wraps ffmpeg under the hood.

It can also be used to remove audio from a video too. Just don't put anything in the audio field and you get just video.

You need to make sure the video codec and audio codec are compatible with the target video container.

i.e. You can put WAV in a MOV but not in an MP4.

It has some wild cards for the output file name. {ext} means use same extension as source video for ouput but you can change it to use a different format.

Hi,

I have VLC and I have installed the FFMPEG library. When I import an mp4 video, it is seen by Reaper as an audio file. How do I play the video? I have read th thread but I'll admit I'm a bit lost. Could someone point me in the right direction in simple terms?

Go to the 'view' tab and open the video-window.

You can also open it by pressing [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+V

On the multi-track window itself a video-file will always look exactly like a normal audio-file.

Hey all,

I'm working with some videos that I've been sent which have multiple audio tracks embedded in the video - two stereo tracks which I can select when playing back in VLC

I can convert the videos or extract the audio externally, but I was wondering if there's a way for Reaper to play back the alternative audio track directly?

Using the item properties allows me to pick other audio channels, but that appears to be limited to the first track only.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
George

Hi ¡¡¡

I use for rendering files all what Iron advised at the beginning of this thread, and convert them with HandBrake.

My question is:

If I would like to render the final file straight from Reaper ( in case for instance of a person that doesn't have space enough in HD )

What parameters do you would you suggest for a medium quality ?

Thanks ¡¡¡

Default MKV multiple audio tracks

Hi everyone! It's maybe a stupid question or already asked on the forum, but guys, how can I choose between tracks when importing the MKV video file? There are 2 audio tracks in the MKV container, but Reaper pre imports for me the 1st track of them. What should I do?
Thank you in advance, guys!

Sound can be stored in multiple streams. i.e. some cameras using 1 stereo stream. Some cameras use 2 mono streams.

Reaper only extracts first stream it finds.

If you extract audio using another tool then some can get all streams merged together.

The free version of Vordio has a tool that can extract and zip audio streams together into one multichannel stream.

Oh, thank you for the answer! After all, there's no other way than using external tools, right?...
Now I figured out that, for now (most likely), Reaper doesn't support that feature.
Ah, okay, I'll do so as you told ^_^

I would need to experiment. Jon from the Reaperblog uses Reaper for all his videos. Try contacting him via social media. He may have written about this in the forum, his site or talked about it on his Youtube channel. Search for Reaperblog.

Default dead ffmpeg links

Those links are dead :
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win32/shared/
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win64/shared/

Because since september 2020 Zeranoe closed his repos :
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffmpeg/comm...n_sep_18_2020/

I've tried the ffmpeg libs from official ffmpeg.org website (https://ffmpeg.org/download.html)
So it sends me here :
https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/

I'm using the 4.3.1 version and while i'm exporting a video (H.264/acc 1920*1080), reaper keeps hanging.

A 0bytes file is created but never growth and can't be read by VLC (version 3.0.11), no CPU is used, Reaper just freezes....

Plugins are stored to :

Default [SOLVED] at least partialy

Hello Dstruct,

thanks for the link, it was the one I already got. So I've investigate a bit more and finaly found the culpit !

My project is at 48Khz, if I try a render at 44,1, it freezes, so, either it's Reaper fault or my soundcard fault, I don't know yet, but forcing the export to 48Khz (my project sampel rate) solves the problem ! If it can help someone passing by ...

I think I've had similar issues. You can switch to the dummy audio driver to render with and in my experience the renders go much faster.

I've found Reaper v6.14 manual still provides the dead Zeranoe link to get built FFmpeg...
I wish it will be corrected.

Default Hardware Acceleration for Video Rendering

Hi I know the video exports are limited in Reaper, but I was wondering if there's any possible way to render directly using Intel's QuickSync codecs, which are hardware accelerated. This means the videos can be exported at better than real-time.

Is there any way to customise the FFMPEG parameters? For instance I would like to use the following parameters:
Code:
ffmpeg -c:v hevc_qsv -global_quality 25 -look_ahead 1
Obviously I can export to an uncompressed format and then re-encode but it would save a lot more time to be able to just do it on the fly.

Sorry for the late reply, only just noticed your post! Thanks for pointing this out.

This was in fact fixed in the 6.16 update.

If you spot any future errors, it's usually best to PM me with details (version, chapter, page, etc), as I don't check every forum post. Thanks!

Default The real way to get FFmpeg on Windows

The "official Reaper" way to get FFmpeg seems now to be to go to the Wayback Machine to get the dead Zeranoe site back; you can however use the new official FFmpeg builds. Here's how I did it in excruciating detail:

(1) Visit https://ffmpeg.org and choose Download, then Windows, then BtbN (or just visit BtbN’s link directly: https://github.com/BtbN/FFmpeg-Builds/releases)

(2) Pick the version you want. You probably want one with a real release number (like 4.3.1), you definitely want 'shared' and you want 'gpl' (not lgpl) if you need H.264 support. For me this was ffmpeg-n4.3.1-26-gca55240b8c-win64-gpl-shared-4.3.zip. Click this link and download the file.

(3) While this is downloading, open Reaper and choose Options | Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder… and open the “UserPlugins” folder

(4) Once your .zip file has finished downloading, open it and find the bin folder. Copy all the files in the bin folder into the UserPlugins folder you opened in step 3.

(5) Restart Reaper. Now in File | Render… you can choose, for example:
(a) Output format: Video (ffmpeg/libav encoder)
(b) Format: AVI
(c) Video codec: H.264
(d) Audio codec: AAC

and you will get an H.264-encoded video.

FFMPEG 4.4 recently came out (April 8th 2021) so I'm testing this on windows, shared build downloaded from BtbN

Video appears to export fine, but the audio track is missing.
This has been a problem with many (all?) versions of ffmpeg since the last working 4.3.1 from Zeronoe.
Disappointing but glad I checked. I try to contact BtbN for a fix.

Confirmed.

Audio track is missing with "MP3" and "AAC". "PCM" option work.

But he says that other software can do proper renders. Weird.

Seems like he's saying ffmpeg had not much updates going on, while Reaper did get a few on the exporting area. It could be on the Reaper side.

Default Totally Confused...

Hi, I'm a little confused about a pair of things about VLC and new FFmpeg...

Let's start with VLC:

Yesterday, I tried to download it from my Mac (Using Safari) and when Download began, Safari blocked the site and told me that "that site wanted to steal my personal data"...

This is the link ( is the first site if we write Vlc in Google ):

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.es.html

I could see that there is another website from which we can download it, for instance:

https://www.videolan.org/

Do you know something about this?...

Are these two websites the same?...

We have also the chance written in the first post of this thread, but I wanted to ask about this because it's strange, at least for me...

The Second doubt it's about FFmpeg...

I have been using old system, download them from the old site and manually copy into Reaper's User Plugin Folder.

Today I could see that all that has changed and now we have 3 executable files on Windows...

Do we have to install the 3 of them?...

Which patch do we have to use?...

Thanks a lot for your help

They're both videolan dot org, so same site and same VLC.

You probably get the Spanish google-result because you're in Spain (Or have something in your browser or computer set to Spanish)
