Default Muting a video's audio only

Hi, all-

I was working on a TV spot yesterday, and imported the video into its own track. In REAPER, it looked just like an audio item, with no reference to the fact that it was video... not what I expected, but not really a problem for me.

But when I tried to mute the video's audio, it also "muted" the video in the video playback window, so I no longer had a picture reference.

Is there a way to mute a video's audio track without losing picture?

Thanks!

LOL! Simple solution. :-) I think when REAPER killed the video, that threw me off so much I lost my head.

Thanks, skmando!

It is an odd behavior, though... I think I'll file a bug report/feature request, because if someone is doing audio post for video, there's never a time when we want the video to go away, except when the window is in the way... and for that we can close the window. :-)

Reaper allows you to have multiple video tracks - the highest track number displays.

This allows you to use REAPER as a bare bones video editor - in this case muting tracks or items and having th evideo go away is quite handy!

A better workflow suggestion is to transcode all your video separating the audio using MPEG Streamclip. This is also recommended as audio in some containers is not reliably in sync.

As an alternative I usually just turn off Master/Parent send in the I/O menu for the track.

All good ideas, thanks!

I can't help but think that in this case, the way other DAWs do it is better, i.e., show me a video item on one track with its audio on the track below it, and each can be muted, trimmed, etc., separately. This would also give more flexibility to those editing video with REAPER.

REAPER has a "one track type only" philosophy. any track can host any media.

There are some cool things you can do like this: a single track can have audio and video material on it in free item positioning mode.

or you can have items that have video and multiple audio takes and use "play all takes" ...

you can switch between multiple video takes - all using the same commands you use for any items.

Yes, and I think that philosophy is pretty great, actually. Maybe then, the best thing would be to ask if the user would like them on separate tracks during import (complete with a "never ask me this again" option). I know, as if REAPER needed more options... :-D

...Aaaaand and it's a duplicate! Sorry for the waste of bandwidth. But since the original request was posted back in 2009, here's a link to it, in case you'd like to give out your vote:

I do this too. Hold "alt" and click on the ins/outs routing symbol to do this a quicker way.

In Joyoshare Media Cutter, you can turn the volume of the video all the way down until it is muted without damaging the picture.
