Media Explorer vs. Dropbox Smart Sync
I've been using Dropbox Smart Sync for a while now and it's absolutely amazing, being able to snap files between local and cloud at the click of a button in the Windows environment, and seeing your entire Dropbox file structure regardless of local/cloud status.
There's a snag though, when you're browsing files in the Reaper media explorer, as one does all the time, then Reaper doesn't know if files are local or online. What happens is that you might be scrolling and previewing samples in the media explorer, with auto-play enabled, and as soon as you hit a sample which is in the cloud, the fact that Reaper tries to open it automatically starts a file download process within Dropbox, and Reaper is waiting to start the sample preview, so Reaper actually locks up until the file has been downloaded. For bigger files this might mean a minute or more of Reaper in a frozen state, waiting for the download, with no option to cancel the preview or skip to something else - under normal circumstances a file would be the file and would load instantly but Dropbox changes the whole premise of how files work within the operating system.
I assume a lot of people use Dropbox, so maybe in some future update it would be a good idea to implement a way for the Media Explorer to display the Dropbox mini-icons so that you can see the sync status of the files. Then at least you can avoid accidentally trying to preview files which are in the cloud. Or prevent Reaper from locking up in that state where it's waiting for the file to download.
