Removing removable storage with VSTs
If I have a project where I have loaded some VSTs from a removable hard disk, and then remove the disk, Reaper crashes.
I do realise this is a stupid thing to be doing anyway, but it might be good if there was a softer landing...

That's just a very very bad idea. Not sure if I'm aware of any "softer landing"..

It indeed is, 'cause NO ONE expects the user to suddenly tear his HD from his puter. Sorry but no one would and should ever do something like that on purpose.

Well... I carry around a bunch of VSTs on my iRiver - which appears to be as hard as nails with regards ripping out at unexpected moments... and Reaper was open in the background (and had been for ages - I was meant to be doing work!) when I had to free up the USB slot. I had forgotten I was using the VSTs off the disk. I hardly did it on purpose...

I thought that the "Safely Remove Hardware" button in the Notification Area would tell you that the USB drive is still in use and not let you stop the device.
of course, you can still pull the USB connector out.

Mp3 players are a poor substitute for a hard drive I think
Tiger direct has 250gb Hard Drives for 50 bucks!! and the external casing is only about $40 .. wah hoo!
I think you Might even be shortening the iRiver's lifespan by running VSTs off of it.

You make a good point - and I've already removed my iRiver from the VST list... But then I didn't really intend to do this - I carry around the VSTs so I can copy them over... This really isn't the way I tend to work. Honest.
That said - maybe I shouldn't be proud to admit it, but I've been pulling the USB cable from my iRiver without stopping it for two years now... I think foolhardy might be the term. Rock and roll.

I have been doing it for 2 years as well. never had a problem. I doubt its nessecary for that type of device.
Now, 200GB firewire hard drive drives, thats a different story
