Default Auto-Create New Track on Item Move...chill dude!

Reaper is in such a hurry to create new tracks.

I'm dragging an audio or midi item around on the bottom track in a session. If I happen to drag (while still holding left-click) the item just a LITTLE bit down, a new track is created...even if I release the item to the original track.

Shouldn't the new track go away if the item is not actually moved to that new track?

I thought this only happened to me. I agree with you. If the item that is dragged isn't dropped onto the new track, the new track should dissappear.

Hey CPC...
Whew, a compadre! Yeah, this is an odd one. I'm tired of deleating those extra tracks, and being that careful when dragging does slow me down.

+1, only create the new track if I drop the clip into the empty space

This new track shouldn't get created at all in this case. Hate it too.

This wouldn't bother me, if it goes away immediately if I don't place items there. It could even be the case, that you want to place an item there. How would you do this? You'd have to create a track first, but this would inhibit the workflow. As it is right now, you can just take an item and place it on the automatically created track.

what about a small "magnetic" barrier, that (i really love the snapping behaviour in Reaper) would inhibit you from dragging too far? and IF you really want to create a new track, just keep on moving.
no clue if this is possible at all )))))))))))

+1 on this older thread. It still hasn't been changed and it still bugs me a lot.

I agree, it's a slight annoyance.

OTOH, it's handy when you want to move stuff out of the way, without going through the hassle of creating a new dummy track.

Yes, but it should create a new track on mouse button release, then there wouldn't be accidental new tracks.

While we're at it...

If you are Alt+dragging (the move contents within the item) and accidentally move the cursor below the bottom of that track, that also creates a new track.

Can't see any reason for that at all! But hey.. it's the weekend, so I'm chilled. Just thought I'd mention

Yep. That's definitely an annoyance, and IMO it should be the default that no track is created if you don't drop anything there.

For the ALT+drag behavior that's just buggy.
