Default Charting drum tracks from scratch

I recently moved over to Reaper from Studio One and noticed there are many ways to add drums. It seems it would be easiest if I could create a track the spans the entire length of the song and then chart it out from there.

I have keyboards at my disposal too and could add drums that way, but I think I like charting it out better. Thanks for any suggestions.

I find it's always best to start with a performance, even if it's sloppy. This way you get natural variations in velocity and timing. If it's so sloppy it makes it hard to even quantize, then it might be easier to overdub the drums one at a time.

If you really wanna do it all via mouse you can just create an empty MIDI item of any length and double click it to edit. Just search "new midi" in actions list. It will be the length of time selection if one exists.

Personally, I loop each section to develop parts and then work on the transitions if necessary.

ReaTrak will fit drums instantly to your song track from the regions.
You can choose mid/stereo wav,mp3 etc/multichannel wav,ogg etc/
It will add the decay that will blend into the next bars.

Same.

Most often I play instruments over looped sections of drums, then glue the drums and add variations and fills that fit with whatever I played over them.
