Default 1st channel of firepod is noisier than the others... are there solutions?

I don't totally mind upgrading my interface - but I was noticing weird noise with a guitar in the first input of my firepod.

I found out soon enough that every source through the first channel is a bit noisier.

has my firepod (nearly 10 years old) finally seen its last days? Or is there something I can do to fix this problem?

What kind of test can I do to see if any other inputs are noisy? Something like, recording some kind of test tone into each input?

Have you tried cleaning it? Some q-tips and rubbing alchohol + fine sandpaper wrapped around a pen can work wonders. Just did the same to the input on my guitar and made a noticeable difference.

Actually, my gut feeling was to take some multimeters to it just to see if there is equal current running through every input/output. Maybe there's some itchy, scratchy shit in there.

(I noticed recently after many years that one headphone stereo channel in my Monitor Studio is reversed. Not related, but a dramatic event waiting for a movie script... )

I would then run maybe high end cymbal or other high frequency tones through each channel at maybe 88.2 or higher, just to see if there was some shift. Then maybe scope the files using "Schope" to see if there is a variance. (with Schope you can view three separate signals sumultaneously. The one that's out may tell a story.)

You can also use a full spectrum tone sweep file (like they use to may IR's) to test along the entire frequency range.

Hope that helps.

I might have just gotten sick of testing things, but I think I actually had a DERP moment and realized the pot was really scratchy, cleaned that out, and it appears to be gone... as a guitar amp owner, and general "things with knobs" owner, I don't see how I forgot this thing I've run into several times over the past 16 years of guitar playing.

that's a good point - the knob is always set to the perfect "guitar level" and probably has something to do with it.

oh wait, what knob are you talking about?
