Default intial burst of sound when rendering

I seem to get a burst of sound when I start rendering.

Something stored or lingering in an FX plugin somewhere?

My solution has been to select all tracks and hit the rec arm button on one track, which sets them all on. I can hear the sound and see it receding in the meters until it's gone.

Then I get clean render. I've tried a few settings in the preferences that I read in other threads but nothing seems to fix this for me.

Any new ideas out there? Thanks!

Try to change this setting on the plugin(s), right click on the plugin(s) from the FX window:
Force auto-bypass on silence on selected FX

If you want to set it for the plugin as default, right click on the plugin before you add it to the FX window and check this:
Default settings for new instances
and then choose 'Force auto-bypass on silence'

I've had cases where if FX like reverb are present at the end of a project, I get a burst of noise at the start, and the fix for me has been to put a volume envelope on the master track, and bring the volume to zero before the very end of the project is reached.
