I have been using Reaper as a redundant spare to a proven hardware sequencer.
Never need much live except for visual metronome/monome, MIDI Program changes for hardware effects and lighting cues.
That gig is finally over and now I want to learn how to use Reaper as a host and re do 26 years of recorded data.
My 5 1/4" FDD's are so old I can barely find any with shelf life left.
You'll notice a female name from Vegas, it's my Valentines Day gift.....Coolness.

Time I jumped into this Century.

Thanks.

This was a wise purchase.
So much to learn just in the Introduction.
I have paused it several times just for jotting down notes for reminders.

Brotha' Man Hopi convinced me of purchasing MacPro vids of Kontakt 205, and now this.
The 2 best purchases I have made other than LASS from AudioBro..

Welcome Criss. Just remember, Reaper is highly customizable, so you can change it to suit your workflow. If some features seem "missing" they're probably just hidden until you decide to bring them front and center to suit your needs. I have also watched Kenny's videos. Great stuff.

Kenny.
I got the video and really appreciate the time it took to make.
I am having difficulties though with applying a Ritardando for MIDI.

I first insert the various meter changes while the tempos remain the same.
For example using the time signature I insert bars of 9/8, but never vary the tempo.
The click sees this and acts appropriately and then I record the entire MIDI track.
In this case it's just the drums.
But when I try and add a Ritardando between envelope points I can see the measures being shortened in length...?
Is there somewhere in your video where I might revisit to see how envelopes are applied.
There's no audio, only MIDI......

The video doesn't get quite as detailed regarding tempo and meter changes.

I'll try to re-create what you're seeing but I would re-post this question in the general area as you'll get more and probably better responses.

Thanks for the support.

Hi Kenny, I am new to Reaper and I remain in awe of the things it can do and how customizable it is. You videos are very information. I just wanted to make mention of one thing. FLAC is not an FLSTUDIO file type. It is a compress audio file format like, ogg vobis, monkey, mp3, etc and it is also not a file type that is supported by FLSTUDIO.

It would have also been helpful to include a section on using multi-timbral VSTi in Reaper. If anyone is reading this, how about putting a downloadable white paper people and download an read.

Actually, that early mistake had been fixed in later versions but it seems to have shown up again. We'll look into it. Thanks.

Unfortunately (for me), Reaper is a very big and wide DAW.

When putting together topics, some things just can't make the cut.

Thanks for the support.

Not a bad idea really. The forum user Nicholas is responsible for the documentation of Reaper, the manual you can download. He's sure to include this topic in the manual. The 3.75 manual had information of multi-out VSTi somewhat spread out. I found it not so easy to find.

I think I can write up a small guide like that fairly quickly.

-edit-
Here's the first idea what this could look like. A simple text PDF.

Bumping this thread cause i'm taking another, more serious look at reaper now. (can anyone say PT9HD license upgrade price???? LOL)

Anyway, have done my first mix with it and so far i'm really liking it.

COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT KENNY'S VIDEOS SO THANKS AGAIN KENNY!

Sorry for the shouting. :P

Is there a thread that eases the pain for PT converts? I'm still torn between changing shortcuts over to what i'm used to, or just relearning habits (12 years+ of PT habits at that..) and want to see what others are doing who are deep into the PT way and steal workflow ideas.

I have a few questions already, but will see if i can solve them myself over the next week or so before asking in the forums.

Anyway, thanks again Kenny! Hope you're well buddy.

I would just change the shortcuts in Reaper.

Shouldn't take that long.

That's what I originally did but put them back for making videos.

Now I get miffed at Pro Tools because the Reaper shortcuts won't work. LOL.

Thanks buddy.

Let me know if I can help. Just got me a new 27" iMac quad core and I'm gonna see what Reaper can do this week.

Loving this Trackpad with Reaper.

Thanks Kenny, yeah i will change shortcuts i think. Awesome on the iMac! I have a quad i7 27" too and doing my usual thing in mixing with reaper the CPU usage was around 30-40% where as in PT it's usually around 60-70%!!

Is PT THAT inefficient with plugins? Crazy.

Not trying to go all off topic but I've had hordes of computers and hosts and have always had cpu issues. I find it ironic that unless I use reaper they persist even though the computers are so much "faster" :??: (current is i7 which technically has 8 cores)

Hey Kenny, quick question;

I've been trying to map command+` to change from edit to mix window as this is what i use in PT (don't use command+= because i like to keep my left hand anchored around the left command key) but i can't seem to choose ` (next to 1.. or the NON shift version of ~ ) in reaper as a key. When i try by itself it registers as numpad 0 ....????

Is this a known issue?

Hey Kenny,
Great job. I had a look at one of your videos on REAPER and I'm hooked. I'll be buying as soon as I can get the $ together (hopefully very soon).
All the best

I just tried it and it worked if you hit the special key (in the dialog) first.

Default Did I order something incorrectly?

I just downloaded R4 Explained, and in the 2nd vid it talks about, and shows, pulling down the REAPER menu to go to 'preferences' to check 'prompt to save on new project'. Well, my copy of Reaper doesn't appear have the same REAPER menu so I don't know where this option is. Also I see a big APPLE on the menu bar in the vid. I have a PC, did I order the wrong version of this video by mistake??

There's only one version but it was shot on Mac.

The preferences for you on PC are at the bottom of the Options menu.

Thanks

Mixing in Reaper should be available any minute.

As far as the others, the order doesn't really matter except for Reaper Tips and Tricks and Reaper Advanced - The SWS Extensions. I would watch those in that order.

Thanks for the support.

Hi,

Is there anyway to get a legato/glide/ portamento effect between MIDI notes? The reason why is because Samplomatic has no glide function which is a shame because it handles pitching quite well on the best resample mode.
I could use a pitch editor in the midi editor but I would have to draw that in for every not. Cant seem to copy it either which would be quicker. Is there a way to copy the pitch bend data. the attatchment shows how im trying to do it without the actual glide function.Still doesnt sound 100% like portamento though.

Cheers.

Kenny makes the Reaper GUI look pretty classy in his vid.

Even in watching the preview, I always learn something from his tutorials.

Kenny,
I just joined...I bought Reaper Explained BEFORE purchasing Reaper.
YOU sold me...
You have such a smooth tutorial
I bought Reaper 5 mins. after watching the intro
Thank you for guidance on this great adventure.

I am taking it slow and soaking it all in
Got Reaper
Got a Focusrite 2x2
Intend on getting Addictive Drums unless I learn otherwise

Thanks to you and all in this forum

You can not go wrong with AD..

Jamstix is not what everyone say's it is & a waste of money...you would be better off spending the $$ on expansion packs for AD.

Just an IMHO....

I completely disagree.

Having spent a lot of time auditioning midi drums to find one that suits a certain song, I find it a lot easier plotting in the basic pattern in Jamstix, and then see how different drummer models can personalize that with variations, fills and all.
