Default Xr18 & Reaper freezing and crashing

If anyone can point me in the right direction, Im hoping it is one of you. In April I set up an in ear monitoring/ recording unit for my band's live performance. Im running an xr18 mixer into a windows 10 laptop ( I've tried 2 different ones) Im using reaper to send backing tracks and a click and using audio inputs 1-12 for the live instruments and midi from the drums. And recording those usb sends into reaper. However 2 weeks ago I can no longer do that cuz when I hit record, reaper freezes 9 sec in and goes into not responding. I have disarmed each of the 12 recording tracks down to 1 midi track and 1 L&R stereo track. That is all that will record without freezing... Any ideas?

Default Hard to crash the Mr18

I've been using Reaper with a Midas MR18 that is very similar to XR18 for over a year and haven't had any crashes.
I have live sound background so we can probably figure this out.
Are you using the Xr18 Midi port? Is is set on Midi-Din Passthrough? Try that if it isn't.
Another potential issue is random midi messages with no destination. This can cause all kinds of conflicts that would cause that kind of problem.
Look into the routing and use midi channel 10 only for the drum, enable the clock only if you're using it. and try to prevent midi data from going nowhere.
Multiple clocks on at the same time when enables would cause that kind of problem.
I'm constantly impressed with the routing and capabilities of my mixer and reaper working together. I can record all the tracks at the preamp stage while mixing the show with a laptop that replays what came out of the speakers after putting the mixer into plugin mode and remix the show right away.
That's a lot of stuff going on at the same time without any issues, don't give up on that rig a lot of bands are using a similar setup.
