Default Mic Placement Acoustic Trio

Audient EVO 4, Reaper, two CAD M179 Multi-pattern large diaphragm condenser mics, one Samson G-Track Pro USB Mic.

I have three musicians performing live and unplugged, vocals and acoustic guitars. No amplification but I'd like to record the performance, audio and video. The performers are seated in a row, three feet apart. Sometimes the performance is inside without an audience for streaming, sometimes outside with a small audience, also streamed. My interface is two channel and my goal is to record the performance to Reaper using two mics.

I'm looking for mic placement suggestions for capturing each performer individually with reasonable balance for a mono recording. Omni recording is ruled out due to excess noise. XY limits the input from the left and right side performers. I'm thinking of getting a mic bar and trying two cardioid mics with a wide pattern placed between left-center and right-center performers.

That's what I'd do given your constraints. Two Line Audio CM3 wide cardioids in ORTF or NOS should do the trick. Shapeways sells ORTF and NOS holders for these specific mics; I find NOS works especially well with these mics but ORTF can work too. You'll have to experiment with distance; don't get too close.

Definitely get a mic bar. For this kind of thing the worst problem is the mic stands And it will be valuable to have in general.

If they don't already know this, stress to the musicians that you will rely on them to make balance adjustments to their positioning. These kinds of recordings can come out wonderfully with nice imaging and balance, but it's a team effort.
