Default Double hits?

So I've been playing around with drum compression and on extreme settings I'm getting what sounds like double hits. Like "cla-clack!" Obviously this is to be avoided, but what's actually happening?

Too high ratio and too fast release.
Has cut out a middle piece of the hit. The rest is like two pieces sounding like cla-clak.
Lower the ratio and give a little slower release time should help out.

That's fascinating. I was using Novatron. I didn't realize one could crush the centre so fully. Nice lesson in how compressors actually work.
