Default editing wave files

I am selecting a section of a wav file in order to increase the volume for the selected area but I cannot figure out how to do it. I am trying to use the manual but I find it rather difficult at times to understand.
Thanks for your help

There are a few ways to do it:

1. You can add a volume envelope to the track and simply raise the level for the section you want boosted.

2. In Reaper Preferences, under Appearance click on Media. Near the bottom where it says "Item Volume Control" select "Knob". Go to your .wav file and split the file at the beginning and end of the section that needs volume adjustment. You'll see a tiny volume knob near the top left corner of the region you split. Click-hold on it and drag up to raise the volume.

3. Split the file at the beginning and end of the section that needs volume adjustment. Right-click the section and select Item Processing -> Normalize Items.

4. Hold shift and drag the top of the item up (without shift you can only turn down the volume, took me a while to find out).

Just for the record:

You don't want to "edit a wave file". You do want to nondestructively modify it's playback parameters.

Man, I have never figured this out after all these years! Thanks a lot!

Here's a video on item volume:

But in case the original poster actually wants to do that, best to point out that Reaper is not really designed for that kind of a workflow. (As curious as it is, some people actually want to literally destructively edit their audio files...)

Another method is to split the file as in (3) and add a JS:Volume adjustment as an Item FX.

Volume automation for the track is more or less how I always make small adjustments to the volume of the track. Once you do one bit which you know is a bit of an issue, you then find yourself making minor changes elsewhere on the track as well - generally improving things.
