Default EZ drummer in reaper with e-drums - how to map

Hello,
I hope I can ask an intelligent question here. I've been fiddling with EZ drummer for a couple days, and I'm getting close to actually using it. But I could use some help.

(1) I have installed EZ drummer and it is recognized in Reaper, and it mostly works.
(2) I'm using a Yamaha DTX kit - and I believe I have figured out how to connect this as a midi input that interfaces with EZ Drummer
(3) I'm able to play the drums along with a recording, to a degree.

I'm trying to simply map my drum pads to EZ Drummer sounds. Where I get confused is where EZ drummer uses channels for the drum kit. I picked a kit and I get channels 1-16, and they include most of your typical drums, plus OH, Amb, Amb Mono, Comp, One Shot, Shaker, Tamb, Perc. Amb. First of all, I don't know what those are. But more importantly, what they don't have it multiple toms, they don't have a floor tom, and they don't have a channel from crash and ride.

Maybe someone who knows better can tell me what a channel is and how do I assign actual drums to the channels? And how does a channel work with a midi map?

Thanks

Quick question...

Does it look like you ticked off everything in this article so far?

Yes. Like I mentioned, I have it working. I just have a mapping issue. This is so foreign to me that I don't what I should be asking. I don't have enough background information on this to know what to ask. And everything I read is topic specific. It is one of the flaws of internet information.

But I would have expected any drum set to include a kick, snare, high hat, hi tom, low tom, floor, tom, crash and ride. I guess I'm just surprised that I see options like AMB and OH?

Ok.

Another question -

If you take a look through this pair of videos is there a "Hey. That's It..." moment?

Thanks for sending those. Actually, I used one of those videos to get started.

What I need is to find someone who understands how this works and to explain it to me so that I can stop guessing. There are too many unknowns for me to ask a decent question, but I don't know where to learn enough to ask a good question.

What about this?

It looks something like what you are describing, so I suspect that you need to do some MIDI mapping tweaking to get to where you want to wind up.

This also might help.

Seems like it could be an "On The 'Yamaha' End..." issue.

Having watched it(that final YouTube video...) a couple of times now, I would put a whole box of jellyeans down that says that dealing with the specific note mapping inside of the Yamaha would sort this right out.
