Default Important communication

I'm sad to announce that the contest will be put on hiatus from January 2020. At some point I will bring it back but right now I have no plans.
So as of now November 2019 and December 2019 are going to be the last 2 contests. The website and the facebook page won't be deleted so you can have access to all the material and be updated on the current state of this project.

Sad news indeed. I know of no other such contest that helps a whole community like this one.

So am I getting ALL the tracks? I have a vocal track called Bass that makes me think that there should be a track (or tracks) for a bass guitar and yet there are none in the tracks I downloaded from the contest site. I'll check the main Cambridge site to see if there's a difference. Just weird to reference all the other players by their instrument NOT to do it on this one as well? Anyone?

just get them from the Telefunkin site

https://www.telefunken-elektroakusti...son-4#download

you might have to scroll down a bit to find this song, it's there though. ( 17 rows down )
The Video gives the complete list of mic/tracks of the recorded session.
Happy hunting.

you'll have to give them an email to get them..

That being said there are TONS of multitracks there to d/l and mix.
No need to go to cambridge if you don't want

Yeah... I simply reached a point where I can’t find the time to manage this contest (properly at least). In the past few months it’s become more a frustration than something fun, so I thought it was in my best interest to call it a day for now.

You didn't...I downloaded your FLAC and the original .wav files from Telefunken and they are identical...I haven't set up a session yet but I'm going to guess that the horn section used their mics for background vocals as well as their instruments, which will make the mix a bit more complex and challenging...

I can understand that, Dave...it's disappointing for me because I'm still pretty new to this site...I wish I had found it a long time ago so I could have done more of these, I have learned a lot and made real, tangible progress as a result of participating...last month I received some really positive and encouraging feedback, which felt really good...

I'm hopeful that someone may step up and take the reigns from you to keep it going...I'm sorry that someone can't be me...

Thanks for all you've done...

Sad news to hear Dave, but you do what you gotta do. It's been only a handful of months participating for me too, but I've also felt a lot of development out of them all the same. So I wanted to add my own huge thanks for all the work you've put in, in the years up until now and in these tentative last two up ahead.

Yeah, didn't check on Telefunken. But I did check the Cambridge site and watched the video. Even though the video lists bass tracks there is no bassist in the video. So I believe that the band has no actual bassist. Most likely key bass. However since the video gives a input list I'm thinking that they actually split the keys and run them through an actual bass amp.

I have run sound for a similar band in a live performance situation who ran a similar set up. I've loaded up the tracks and organized them. But haven't had time enough yet to see if this is the case.

Gotta go to work this morning. So it'll have to wait for tonight to see if that is the case or not. Unless of course someone else beats me to it.

Thanks for all your efforts!

Only found the contest last month, but even this one time participation taught me so much in terms of workflow etc. Was my first big mix under time restrictions since I found out about the contest only a day before the end of mixing time . I wouldn´t have done it if it wasn´t for the contest so it´s indeed sad to hear that it´s not gonna happen for a while.

Thanks again and hope that you´ll take it on again soon.

You are right, Dave, the song is pretty cool...I'm not at all impressed with the drum recording...the cymbal swells during the intro aren't there as far as I can tell, and the kick and snare are what I would call "ploppy"...not sure what to do with them yet...

True, drums are a challenge.
Any news or insights regarding the bass track?
The bass track included in the download from the contest page sounds more like a room mic.

OK, compared the zip file from the telefunken site with the one from the reaper contest page and found no differences (except in size, which I guess is due to different formats).
So apparently there is no real bass track?
Maybe they had the intention to record one but it didn´t work out technically or was forgotten/got lost when the zip repository was created?

Yeah I was able to vote on my phone after trying and failing to do so on my computer. They don't share the same IP obviously...so not sure whyy computer couldnt vote but my phone could.

Anyway, as stated...I was able to vote. Just had to use alternate means.

Sorry to read the contest is coming to an end, you've helped me improve my mixing skills by facilitating this contest. I cannot thank you and the critiquers (is that even a word?) enough.
Very timely for me as I am trialling an alternative to Reaper but a loss to the Reaper community for sure.

congratulations to Eddiex

here are my short notes on the tracks:

#01 my mix

#02 vocals seem too loud in the beginning, drums sound nice but too quiet, overall mix very transparent but could use some warmth

#03 nice reverb on vocals but could use some lowpass, really like your instrumental parts, violin sounds really sweet, last refrain seems
to be a bit overcompressed, good drum sound

#04 drums seem too quiet against vocals, can't hear the kick, mix would benefit from less compression (on master track i guess)

#05 beginning could have more space, don't like the delay/reverb setting on vocals too much, if the main vocals were about 2dB down every
other instrument and backings would come up and have more impact

#06 sounds like the drums are in front, then the other instruments, singers are behind all others, drums are punchy

#07 for my taste too much delay in the intro, keys too loud in the beginning, kick has too much low end, good snare sound, (seems that a
lot of compressors are working in that mix and maybe they are changing the balance between instruments and vocals)

#08 good balanced mix, great drum sound, if you had handled the p and b sounds in the vocals it would be a perfect mix (but almost noone did)

#09 delay in the beginning should be more in time, seems that the kick drives the master limiter so that the whole mix is pumping
(interesting that your mix has a high loudness range (13,3))

#10 good mix overall, the (keyboard-) bass has too much low energy

#11 like your drum sound, good mix, good dynamic

#12 vocals nice but a bit thin in the beginning, missing kick drum and too much hihat, whole track is 7% slower than original probably a 44.1/48kHz
conversion issue

i voted 8 - 10 - 3

Hmmm...#9 was my mix. However your observations are quite troubling. First off the delay is mapped to the tempo. So I have no idea how that could be off tempo? Also the main mix loudness was checked and I just confirmed with YouLean that the LUFS was -14 and -1.5 truepeak?

I'll go check the final mix online to confirm but I have no idea how the loudness could be as you say?

I was referring to the loudness range which is quite big, and not bad at all.
I was just wondering that to me your mix sounds compressed but the loudness range isn't small.
Listened to your song again, you're right the delay matches the tempo

Ahh...all good then you had me worried for a minute! Yeah I tried using a bare minimum of compression because I wanted a very wide dynamic range for this type of music. The pumping is certainly not what I had in mind however!
