There are many ways to make a track and/or an item play back mono.
An easy way to get either the right or left channel audio on a track to play back mono is to insert the JS Effect named "chanmix2", then on it's controls turn down the volume of the unwanted channel (left or right), finally pan the desired channel to play back in the center.
If you want all audio on a track to play back summed to mono then insert the "chanmix2" plugin, pan left and right to center and lower both channel volumes by 6 dB to compensate for the additional volume summing them will generate.
Lastly if you want an individual item to play back mono just select the item and hit the F2 key. This will open up the Item Properties window. About halfway down the window you will see a drop down menu called "Channel Mode", click that and select the desired channel playback scheme for that item.
I hope this helps you out. As mrelwood has already said you can also have all audio in the session play back mono by clicking the button just to the left of 'Mute' or just below 'Solo' on the Master channel strip.
Hopefully one of the really great screen capture gurus here will do a little pictorial posting for you but for now I think this should be clear enough.
