Default imac 5k users help me out!

Hi there,

I'm testing some different screen updating things for macOS, can you test this on your 5k imacs:

https://1014.org/_/metal_test.zip

There are 3 updating modes: Metal, Layers, and Classic.

When you launch it, it will prompt you if you want to use Metal, and if not, if you want to use Layers.

If you could let it run for at least 30 seconds in each mode (maybe a few times, too), at the default size, then post here with the framerates of each mode that would be helpful!

If you can include your macOS version and hardware revision (mid-2018 or whatever) that would be extra-helpful!

Thanks!

iMac Pro (2017), Vega 64 graphics, running Mojave 10.14.5:

Metal - for many of these tests the FPS readout becomes jumbled and unreadable, but the results I'm getting are:

Effect 1: 19.45 fps
Effect 2: readout is garbled but looks like 60 fps
Effect 3: 60 fps
Effect 4: 60 fps
Effect 5: 60 fps
Effect 6: readout is garbled
Effect 7: readout is garbled
Effect 8: readout is garbled
Effect 9: readout is garbled
Effect 10: 60 fps
Effect 11: readout is garbled
Effect 12: 60 fps
Effect 13: readout is garbled but looks like 60 fps
Effect 14: 60 fps
Effect 15: readout is garbled
Effect 16: 18 fps
Effect 17: 40.5 fps
Effect 18: 7.5 fps
Effect 19: 10.7 fps
Effect 20: readout is garbled
Effect 21: readout is garbled
Effect 22: readout is garbled
Effect 23: 60 fps
Effect 24: readout is garbled
Effect 25: 60 fps

On Layers and Classic, the frame rate for everything is horrendous, around 10 or 11 fps or less

sorry, if it wasn’t clear, just leave it on the default test (and at the default size!)

Not on a 5k iMac here either (late 2013 Macbook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.3), but in case it is useful information :

Test app reporting size 1440x816

metal ~59 FPS
layers ~55 FPS
classic ~30 FPS

edit : also tried with the "looks like" system display setting set to max resolution

Test app reporting size 1800x1116

metal ~48 FPS
layers ~30 FPS
classic ~20 FPS

Super weird that I'm getting such terrible performance on the Layers & Classic tests compared to you then, what's the CPU? I'm on the 10 core so maybe yours is one of the beefier ones?

Also, are you running a 10bit colour profile? That affects it a lot. Im using an 8bit profile.

Ah right, the colour profile is probably what's having more of an effect then, I'm just running the default colour profile.
