Default Audio Stops and Starts

I've imported WAV files into Reaper and when I play them the file starts and then it will stop and start intermittently.

Can yo show us a video of this happening or attach a project file so we can look at it?

Does this happen with all audio files? Or only with specific ones?

What are your current settings under Prefererences > Audio > Device?

After you have pressed Play, does Reaper stop-start just once or does it do it several times until you hit stop?

I have a strange stutter going on where when I hit play, Reaper starts to play the project for a short time, then stops for what seems to be the same amount of time, then starts playing normally without issues until I hit stop.

One strange thing with this is that the time of the first period of playing and then waiting seems directly related to the ASIO buffer size, the larger the buffer size, the longer it plays and waits before it continues. Experimenting, I have found out that at
  • 128 samples buffer, the stutter does not appear;
  • 256 samples buffer, the stutter and wait times are roughly 0.2 seconds;
  • 512 samples buffer, roughly 0.5 seconds;
  • 1024 samples buffer, roughly 1 second;
  • 2048 samples buffer, roughly 2 seconds;

So I now do my mixing at 128 buffer, and that works, but it is strange that the larger the buffer, the longer the stutter. I do not know when this behavior started, but I cannot recall this behavior from a number of versions back, say half a year or so.

W7x64, Reaper v5.978/x64 portable install

It stops for about a second and then starts again. It will play for a while longer then stop and start again.

Is the time counter in the transport bar flashing red when this happens? If so it is a read/write error, the hard drive can't keep up. I am limited (at the moment) to 48k due to this.
