Default A quick question about updates...

Hiya Peeps,

Long time SONAR user here... I'm sure you are all hearing the latest news haha!

Anyway, a couple of years ago I installed and purchased Reaper, just to try, and I must admit that I found it reasonably easy to pick up, albeit the settings side of things were a bit of a pain, but not insurmountable.

The version I paid for back then was 4.78 so, the question is, do I have to pay another $60 (plus the usual taxes and stuff) to get back up to speed with the latest version.

I think I know the answer to that but I thought I'd check in here first.

cheers, and thanks,

andy

I think if you purchased V4.x you are good until V5.99 aka V5 should work with your existing license.

Do you have your license file from the original purchase email or in the folder of the old install or somewhere?

SWS Extensions are like "power user" tools as an add-on, like macros etc (and more). http://www.sws-extension.org/

Reapack - had not heard of but it's like a download tool for add-ons.

Thank you very much, I will have a look into those

I'm having a play... So much to unlearn, if you know what I mean... I'm a long time SONAR user and sometimes we just want other DAW to be, erm... SONAR haha...

Hi Andy,

Good to hear you're all up to date with the latest version and the SWS and ReaPack stuff.
I clicked the link in your signature and see we share many of the same influences. Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis are also major influences for me.

I have very limited Internet data at the moment so didn't get to check out your YouTube tracks but I did listen to Idyia and enjoyed it. Very nice touch with the Strat over the ambience.
When I have more data, I'll have to check out more of your music.

Andy,

Hi.

Long time Cakewalk user here too (albeit I jumped ship at Producer 8.53).
This PDF helped me cut over to Reaper at first...

I'll have to check that out - similar influence and tastes.

Funny how many of us baled on sonar when they introduced the first X series....

FWIW there is a link on here somewhere to a file that supposedly helps Sonar users adjust but it is old and I was already fairlty well entrewnched iN Reaper before I found it.
Not sure how much use it would be to you, but at least all those excellent feree video tutorials on the downloads section should go a long way to getting you up to speed.

I did too. I figured if I had to learn a whole new DAW I might as well see what else is out there. Saw Reaper's price and flexibility and never looked back.
Cakewalk seemed to have driven off a lot of loyal users with that move. I have been using it since Pro Audio 9.

Thank you very much Dave.

Most of my stuff is beatless ambient lately... I find it much easier than creating conventional stuff haha! Especially as I am working on my own nowadays too.

I'll catch up with some of your stuff as soon as I get chance.

cheers

Well, let me know how you get on with that haha!

Most people, including myself, fall asleep before the exciting bits start (which they don't )

cheers

Thanks, I will have a good poke around.

I must admit that I quite enjoyed the switch to Sonar 6PE to X1. I found the new GUI better for working on a single screen.

cheers, and thanks again,

andy

Yeah, perhaps things would have worked out differently but at the time I wasn't aware of Reaper. Or, more to the point, I support, I already had Sonar and thought that I'd stick with that.

It will be an interesting few months ahead, for sure... I am still sitting on the fence, I guess, not quite knowing whether to jump entirely onto Reaper or stick with Sonar and hope a solution is found. Trouble is, I have developed my own particular way of working within Sonar and, like a lot of peeps, I hate change.

Might be best if Sonar just packed in on my laptop, save me faffing around... haha

cheers

andy
