Default Why does Reaper create break in item during take?

If you have one item recorded, then punch in in the middle and record another take, Reaper splits the new item at the end of the older item? Why? Can we turn that off?

Because that's how takes work. If you want to use the normal intended take and comping system, that's what it does. There are ways to "turn it off", but they make comping more difficult than it needs to be. Get used to it.

A very important thing to try to make a habit right away is to not just "drop in" (or out) any damn place you like on each pass, but choose a start and end point and use them consistently so that all subsequent takes are actually the same length and you don't end up with 15 little "stubs" at either end. That's not that difficult to fix either. Just select all the little bits and delete them, and slip the "original" items to meet what's left. It's a lot nicer if you just don't create them to begin with. If you know that you're going to try multiple passes of a given section, loop record is a great help, but actual discipline about where you drop and stop is better.

It's much less of an issue if you just don't use take lanes. There is an option in preferences/appearance/peaks to color each take pass, which makes the single lane approach easier to use. And yea, like ashcat is saying, use time selection and loop to keep all your takes the same length and it won't look so messy.
