Default Updated (again) Faderport Support (Faderport XT)

A new windows only update has been uploaded by amagalma. If his update interests you, head over to his thread here . If you use OS X or just want this driver, keep reading

Latest Update February 13, 2016

Download
https://stash.reaper.fm/26189/Faderp...%20Release.zip

After working with the code for a while I've decided to release the faderport XT driver based on the work of yhertogh's and karbomusic's additions to the driver.

This is karbomusic's original thread on the topic.

Since this is based off of the code of both karbo and yhertogh, this plugin should replace theirs.

Installation for Windows & OS X

Installation is a bit different than the original, instead of replacing Reaper's built in control surface plugin, this will be installed as a UserPlugin.
  1. Locate the Reaper Resource Directory. You can find it by starting Reaper and clicking Options > Show Reaper Resource Path in explorer/finder.
  2. Copy reaper_csurf_fpxt.ini to the Resource folder.
  3. Copy the reaper_csurf_fpxt library file (dll for windows; dylib for mac) to the UserPlugins folder. If it doesn’t exist, create it.
  4. Restart Reaper.
  5. Go to Options > Preferences > Control Surfaces and select Faderport XT
  6. Choose PreSonus - Faderport for both MIDI In & Out devices.
  7. Click OK twice.
  8. Your Faderport should now be set up using the new driver.

** If you are using karbomusic's Faderport XT, you will need to replace it with reaper_csurf.dll that came with Reaper before installing this one.

New Features
  • Shift + Bank activates FX mode (FADER_CONTROLS_FX in prefs)
  • -Bank light will blink when in FX mode
  • -Select through FX with Channel Select
  • -Select through Params with scroll knob
  • Time for pan to reset touch state can be modified (PAN_TOUCH_RESET_TIME)
  • Added support for Action CommandID
  • Reload .ini file during runtime (Shift + Stop + Play; Shift does _not_ latch for this)
  • Scrolling with pan knob delays updating fader (PAN_SCROLL_FADER_TIME)
Customization

All customizations are in the INI file (reaper_csurf_fpxt.ini) here are the defaults but the entire point is that you can make them do what works best for you:

==============================================
** New options are in bold **
Code:
MCP_VIEW=1 (default=1, enabled, Autoscroll works)
SHIFT_LATCH=1 (default=1, enabled, shift latch works)
AUTO_SCROLL=1 (view will scroll if track is hidden)
SELECT_IS_TOUCHED=1 (when creating a new track, make the new track also the 'last touched track')
PAN_SCROLLS_TRACKS=1 (Use the pan knob to scroll through tracks)
FADER_CONTROLS_FX=1 (Allows you to change FX params with the fader)
PAN_TOUCH_RESET_TIME=250 (Sets how long it will take for pan to reset after being touched)
PAN_SCROLL_FADER_TIME=250 (If pan scrolls tracks is active, Sets the delay for how long the fader updates to the new track's fader location)
PAN_MIN_TURNS=1 (The number of turns to actually get one turn event)
PAN_RESOLUTION=128 (The number of turn events to pan from L to R)
SELECT_TOUCHED_PARAM=1(Clicking an FX param in fx mode assigns the fader)

ENABLE_INTRO=1 (Allows a little intro light show of a text string)
INTRO_STRING=FPXT (The text string that the faderport lights will display)

;pan actions
;0=pan, 1=scroll tracks, 2=custom actions
PAN_MODE=1 (Sets the action for turning the pan knob)
PAN_MODE_SHIFT=0 (Sets the action for turning the pan knob while shift is pressed)
ACTION_PAN_LEFT=40104
ACTION_PAN_RIGHT=40105
ACTION_PAN_LEFT_SHIFT=41666
ACTION_PAN_RIGHT_SHIFT=41667

ACTION_PUNCH=40222 (set start point)
ACTION_PUNCH_SHIFT=40172 (Go to previous marker/project start)
ACTION_USER=40157 (insert marker at current position)
ACTION_USER_SHIFT=40173 (Go to next marker/project end)
ACTION_LOOP=1068 (toggle repeat)
ACTION_LOOP_SHIFT=40915 (set end point)
ACTION_FOOTSWITCH=40073 (play/pause)
ACTION_FOOTSWITCH_SHIFT=1013(record)
ACTION_MIX=40078 (toggle mixer visible)
ACTION_MIX_SHIFT=41077	(toggle show all floating windows except mixer)
ACTION_PROJECT=40861 (go to next project tab - cycle)
ACTION_PROJECT_SHIFT=40295 (zoom out project)
ACTION_TRANS=40259 (toggle transport visible)
ACTION_TRANS_SHIFT=1134 (tap tempo)
==============================================

To customize just grab the action ID you need from reaper and change it in the INI file for the button you wish to customize. You can right click the Action and select "Copy selected action command ID". This will work with custom actions as well as extensions (ex. SWS)

Hey man,

Nice job. Got your PM and you are correct, been busy as crap so if this also contains the windows version, run with it and I'll pull down from your repository in the near future. Thanks again for running with this, the Mac users will be extremely happy to see this. I've kept up with this since 2010 or 2011 so I don't mind a break for sure. You might throw it in the stash soon, just so it is also available in the event you and I are kidnapped by hot swiss babe insurgents or something, never to be seen again.

Default How to modify FX with Faderport

Getting to and using FX Mode

First enable/add the line FADER_CONTROLS_FX=1 to your ini file.
You don't have to restart reaper either, press SHIFT+STOP+PLAY (shift latch doesn't matter here) if it worked, the three lights will flash. (This button combination reloads the ini file, updated your button mappings)

Then, press SHIFT (and hold, if shift latch isn't enabled) + BANK. The BANK button will begin to blink and if you currently have a track selected with TrackFX, the fader should jump to the value of the first plugin's first param. If there are no FX on the track (or on the last selected track) the Bank light will blink quickly a few times before shutting off. This means that FX mode failed.

NOTE: In some rare cases, entering FX mode on a new track or one with newly added FX will fail. Simply click off of the track and selected it again. This should fix the issue.

You can use the PAN knob to select different params within the plugin and use the Channel Select to select the next or previous plugin in the chain. For now, the info tooltip in the bottom left hand corner of the REAPER window will briefly display the currently selected FX or param. The fader should also jump to the value of each selected param! This will allow you to automate FX params like the volume, but there are bound to be some bugs with this feature.

Simply Press the BANK button once more to exit FX mode.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! My Faderport has been reborn! I have waited so long for this piece of brilliance. My Mac is listening to my Faderport, and my Faderport will not stop giving it directions. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. This is going to be a very late night. You need to spread the word on this, shout it from the rooftops! Just fantastic work.

If the Swiss babe insurgents haven't taken you away yet, I have a couple questions. I am really struggling to get the pan knob to land on specific parameters. It seems jumpy for lack of a better word. Is it possible to change the sensitivity of the rotational readings? In other words, make it so that moving to the next parameter requires a bit more turning.(Hopefully creating a larger landing spot?) If that is not possible, could I somehow switch parameter selection from the pan knob to the channel select? I realize that some FX have hundred+ parameters available, but the exactness of clicking would be faster at this point. Thanks again for your outstanding work, it just feels so nice to write automation with an actual fader. Cheers!

Yeah I've had that problem as well. I believe it's a problem with the firmware as this also happens in S1. I suppose I could let you change the sensitivity of the pan knob but I'd really like to allow you to click on the param you want. The issue is that the only way I've found that the API will notify me of which param was touched is if you actually change the param. I will look more into it tonight.

Actually, I was wrong. I seems that the event I need fires even if you don't actually change the param. So I've implemented 3 things:
Pan minimum turns - That is, it will take an arbitrary number of turns to actually get a single turn event
Adjustable pan resolution - The default is 128, which means it would take 128 turn events to get from 100% L to 100% R.
Select Touched Param - Which will do what it sounds like..the last touched param will be assigned to the fader.

The corresponding options are:
Code:
PAN_MIN_TURNS=3
PAN_RESOLUTION=128
SELECT_TOUCHED_PARAM=1
I've updated the file in the original post.

The Faderport worked as a control surface right out of the box for me. The thing is I originally wanted to use it as a MIDI controller instead in order to assign the controls to other things per Reaper's features for this.

Any way to modify your custom driver to do that?

It works out of the box for most everyone but that functionality pales in comparison to what is in the extended version; in my humble yet biased opinion of course.

If I understand correctly, assigning different things to the controls means editing the .ini file?

Alright, I'll bite.

Thanks Nimaj for your work!

Yea, many of the buttons are mapped to that ini file. So, you can assign actions to buttons at will. That's the base functionality I inherited, then extended from yhertogh, then I added a few more things then The_Nimaj added even more.

I considered this but mucking through the SDK trying to find examples and documentation is a nightmare. It would've saved me time rather than trying to reinvent the wheel (looking at FX params...). But since PreSonus insisted this not be a standard midi output device someone would have to essentially write a new driver I think.

Try opening the .ini file, I think you will find it more to your liking. Everything is working fantastically for me here. I did have an additional question about which buttons are available for actions. Is this limited to only the button combinations that have been defined in the .ini file? There are a couple buttons on the Faderport that I don't find myself using, but they are not listed in the .ini file. I didn't want to muck up anything as I am slightly out of my league here, haha. I'm just gonna keep thanking you guys, thanks, thanks, thanks.

Had some fader hangup (conflicting messages I believe)
Tried EasyQ (vst), didn't work first. But that's because Reaper doesn't see parameters there.
Tried some other 3rd part vsts. Working so good

This is awesome!

So,
send vol/pan is maybe the only thing left now?
Can I assign sws-actions?
Can there be help-text in ini-file?

I just have to find a reliable way to select the sends.
Yes, you can assign any action (afaik).
For help-text, I'm sure that shouldn't be too difficult. I believe lines that start with ';' are comments so that's no problem if i'm right. Otherwise I'll just put inside of the README that comes along with the driver.

This is awesome news that you're continuing Karbomusic's work! d=

I can't wait to try this newer Faderport Reaper driver and FX controls! Thank you so much and happy New Year!

Cheers! :P

p.s. I'm also one of those who would really like to be able to use the fader with MIDI CC messages... that would be so great!

I've gone ahead and stashed the download as it is so the driver is abduction proof. I'll look into the Midi CC stuff. I don't have any experience with it but I'll read up on it and see what can be done .

Default Update 12.31.2015

There was a bug where if you used FX mode while touching automation, it would overwrite automation already in the lane. This has been fixed and touch mode should behave as expected.

A few cosmetic adjustments:
The STOP, PLAY, and SHIFT buttons will blink a few times to confirm that the ini was reloaded.
If you attempt to enter FX mode but the plugin hasn't detected any valid plugins, the Bank light will blink (rapidly) to notify you and then shut off (maybe).

Additions
The pan knob can now be assigned several different functions.
There are two new options named PAN_MODE and PAN_MODE_SHIFT in the ini. They can be set to 3 options.
0 = The Pan knob will operate as a pan knob
1 = The Pan knob will scroll through tracks
2 = The pan knob will trigger actions (that you can assign, read below)

Assigning and using custom Pan Actions
Four more options in the ini file are included:
Code:
ACTION_PAN_LEFT=40104
ACTION_PAN_RIGHT=40105
ACTION_PAN_LEFT_SHIFT=41666
ACTION_PAN_RIGHT_SHIFT=41667
These work just like the buttons, assigning PAN_MODE to '2' will trigger ACTION_PAN_LEFT/RIGHT and assigning PAN_MODE_SHIFT to '2' will trigger ACTION_PAN_LEFT/RIGHT_SHIFT while shift is down.

NOTE: The pan knob is still bound to the PAN_MIN_TURNS option!

This makes your pan pot much more powerful. I made it this way mainly because I couldn't find a reliable way to use the pan knob as a jog wheel, so the actions assigned above are SWS actions that seek 1 or 10 pixels respectively.

The download link has been updated.

Default Faderport XT not in Control Surfaces

Hi,

Long time Reaper user, first time poster.

Recently picked up a Faderport and was using it with out-of-the-box functionality. That's OK but I would really like to use the enhanced XT driver. It sounds really good. I followed the installation instructions but when I get to step #5 I don't see Faderport XT as a selection in the control surfaces. I see the PreSonus Faderport (the one I was using) but not the XT option.

I'm hoping the issue is something simple that I am overlooking. Any advice on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

Mac OS 10.11.1
Reaper v5.1/i386 (32 bit)

reaper_csurf_fpxt.ini - Copied to: Users\<my user>\Library\Application Support\REAPER\
reaper_csurf_fpxt.dylib - Copied to: Users\<my user>\Library\Application Support\REAPER\UserPlugins

Restarted REAPER.
Restarted Mac.

Thanks,
Dave

Is there a particular reason you've gone with the 32bit version of REAPER? Since you're running 10.11 you must have a 64bit processor so I assume that it's a plugin constraint?

In any case, I've found the issue but I found another bug. I'm much too tired at the moment so please check back sometime this afternoon and I will post the update.

EDIT: Here's a direct link to the version that should work for you, this should suffice until I can properly release it. A note: There's a little light show at the startup; I'll disable it when I release later but now I sleep.

Btw: My faderport seems unstable in basic functionality.
Believe it has more to do with firmware.
Anyone else experiencing the same?

What are you experiencing and which firmware are you using?
Have you ruled out that it isn't an error on my part (by using the built-in reaper driver)?

I believe I have newest firmware.
It sorts of freezes, or is hard to respond for buttons.
I had the same issues prior to your driver, so, can't blame you I guess
Worked better after firmware upgrade/flash,
but now it was back to bad behavior.

Another Faderport user here.

Thanks for this effort, The_Minaj, and to your predecessors for bringing it to this stage.

No problem, I'm happy to do it. Only the N is before the M. No relation to Nicki.
