Default Does Reaper Check for Updates Automatically?

I am using Reaper to provide reverb for my Hauptwerk Theatre Organ. It works fine, but I've noticed that a few minutes after loading Reaper and Hauptwerk the CPU meter in Hauptwerk goes briefly all the way into the red and the audio (if I'm playing) is highly distorted. I don't have the issue if Reaper isn't running, so I am thinking that there is some fairly extensive activity that is disrupting Hauptwerk, perhaps checking for a new version.

Does it do that? If so, is there any way to turn that off?

Options > Preferences > General,
[] Automatically check for new versions of REAPER on startup.

Note at the bottom-left of the Preference window there is a search/find box, it really comes in handy!

Just the aside that AFAIK, Reaper only checks on startup.
