Default When Your Dreaming by the River

Just popped a new tune "When Your Dreaming by the River" up on Soundcloud.
https://soundcloud.com/steve-maitland-1
I used a Buzz Audio Mastering Compressor over the top of the mix only compressing 2 dB.

I am learning as I go, I do really like the Compressor a Buzz Audio DBC-M I have Tim Farrant's SOC-1.1 that that has a beautiful sound. I am not affiliated in any way
I like you always wish to know what works and what does not!

Anyway hope you like the tune

You are incredibly kind Chas I find it really hard to critique myself....
I must admit I like these lyrics.
That guitar I am using is one I put together using purchased parts....
It is a joyous thing when you get a song written though isn't it...

Thanks

I like the song. Classic blues. I first of all like the voice, sounds authentic blues to me (white blues, right?).

But there is something very strange with the drums.

The Blues is a shuffle rhythm. The drum-pattern (programmed right?) is very straight (just a little shuffle i guess).

I would really work on the drums again, they spoil the whole feeling.

Sorry, I hope you don´t mind my critisism

I wish to be myself Whistler no worries here I am always trying to create...
Thanks for your comments all the same.
I have a lot to learn in regards to standard mixing etc and I am enjoying it all your comments included.
I like cross rhythms etc and doing this sort of thing, think of it as 3D 4D all rhythms dissect at some point at least that's my theory it is the way I hear it.
All life has confusion and blessed moments of togetherness and quality time that is why I write my music the way I do.

I will continue to update this song
I wish to have a year learning to mix better, I have Kenny G's videos and all confidence in Reapers Forum despite my apparent individualism.
Thanks for the comments I am learning how to use compression next something I just have not used before Dreaming may turn out different. I have learnt when you get to re working numbers a lot an awareness sometimes happen when things get simplified.

Thanks all

Heya-yep I like the tune, but feel the harmonica is a touch tooo loud for your vocals.
Compression- some people seem a little hyped about it because that's what it can do to audio-or- squeeze the living light out of it.
I love compression for all it can do-but if you want natural-I would not use it at all.
TA.

Hello to Chas, Trevlyn, Whistler, Tim Farrant (Buzz Audio) and Bri.

Due to International pressure and in an effort to improve world wide relations I have re grouped and ironed my tune again.
As you will see I have stopped my uncouth ways and spelt "You're" the right way grammatically.

All good I have played the bass the way I intended before I gave up and played a run that is years old this one is me.
I am pleased with this.
All good great to have friends as critics.
This release is more Mp3 friendly.
Tim gave me a tip about compressing electric guitar
I think I won with this on this on my lead in this track.

Thank you all for our discussions

Yes Bri is right I put this up yesterday the Harp might be just a little loud still even though I turned it down, on our lap top speakers it sounds a tad loud on the desktop it is right you know how it goes so many different setups totally impossible to deal with every type of speaker or speaker assembly.

Good vibe. Nice vocal performance and sonics overall. The drums are way behind the beat. Fix that, and I'd say you're there!

edit: looking at thewhistler's comment about the drums and your response, I'm guessing that the delay in the drum track is something you wanted. If so, I'm just hearing the track's rhythmic framework differently than you.

Hi Timothy and thank you for listening to my number.
I think what you are hearing is something about this tune that is quite different to normal music.
Speaking only of the verses the chorus's are in normal fashion..
the intro and leading lick gives the impression that the starting note and starting first beat ( and in normal music it would be ) is on the third note / beat you hear.
This is not the case the first beat of the bar starts on the fourth note at end of intro.
I just did it that way and had to find out myself in terms after the fact I just liked the sound of it.... I am weird perhaps...
Please feel free to come back at me on this... if you fell that I am wrong.
There may be something I should be noticing sometimes too much time with something leads to confusion.

Best

Steve

What I was noticing wasn't the metric offset you described but the drums being about 200-300 milliseconds late on the verses (in relation to the pulse of everything else in the arrangement), less so on the chorus but still late there also.

Okay yes Timothy I just like what I would call "slap back".
Yes just my personal taste.
I guess it just may not be to taste for me though I am happy with it.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Getting away from strict rhythm
I think it fits to the lyrics, peace among the slaughter so to speak!

Have to agree, but think it's intentional-the drums have a kinda groove/swing going on to begin, but the bass is fairly stiff until around 2:04-the bass loosens up a little.
Sounds ok here though- if it were me would still bring the vocals a little more above the bline.
Cheers to grinder.

I am wondering
I think what I will do is stem the tracks and
make another project then render
Maybe the timing is getting flumoxed.
I have gone through the hoops pretty much
but did not wish to interfere too much with being natural.
There is nothing that stands out as far as alignment of notes etc goes only the lead guitar is where I allow myself to be a bit floral.
I will be back in about a week.
Thanks for the critique no harm in trying things.

Very original! You've got your own style that's for sure. Did you play the harmonica as well? The mix in my headphones was good, although I would like a tad more vocals. As far as the music arrangement, I felt that the drums weren't in the "pocket" for a bluesy song like this. I felt they needed to be more on the end of the beat, if that makes sense, to really find that pocket groove.

Hi Sammy
I am using this song as a learning song so I am continuing to develop it.
I want it to really excite so I do need to develop a great rhythm section.
Easier to do in a band of good players.
I wish to educate myself this year on producing my material better.
I think in my guts I have not quite captured the magic of the instrument background yet myself. I am pleased with my lyrics.
I used to be very enthusiastic on the harp it has to be said.
I have found last night a lick I was playing on keyboard (Hammond) that interfered with the vibe, I am in the process of substituting.
I play all instruments except the drums If I had drums I would attempt to play them too I guess most of us would not have the room nor the cash..
Thanks for your comments Sammy and the "original" bit I consider I have always been that, I can always appreciate others work but never escape looking for a new way.
I am looking at the drums this week just getting the vibe with the bass and a couple of other instruments and vocals first.

Heart felt Morgon many thanks.
I have found out my problem with my song today, that said I can keep my beat!
When we sing a song right off without accompaniment we often do small (air breath)
pauses and in my case I never noticed. Tired who knows I move on. The pauses and there will be about 4 occur mainly as the verse goes into the light chorus and the main chorus just an eighth of a bar.
If I took these out I just would not have the same song.
So a bit of work ahead and I think the number is sounding much more solid with the work I have done yet to be online.
Just goes to show a person sometimes has to dig deep even in audio!
Thanks for the support everyone and the critique.

Default The end

Now Judder I found out where the low tongue on the bottom end is useful, I believe it gives the bass that beautiful misty sound and would not be there without it!
This is my third and last revision of When Your Dreaming by the River.
I have certainly learned a bit over the last week and all for the good.
I know Judder did not mention the low end on this post but I have noticed his other post!
It is all for the good when you do the physical thing like immersing yourself with something using your ears fingers and mind.
Heaps more to learn to.
Hope this new tidy up fits your listening pleasure.

Muchas Gracias
