Default Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra -- CC-licensed sample library

I'm proud to announce the release of Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, a Creative Commons-licensed orchestral sample library in sfz format.

Some of you might remember this thread -- well, this is what the experiment lead to. None of this would have been possible without the help and feedback from the REAPER community, so I'm letting you know first.

Enjoy!

I have been beta testing these and I've got to encourage people to try these. These are free and quite usable. And even if you are not a total beginner, they are an easy and a quick way to get orchestral ideas out of your head and into songs. Awesome work!!

Thanks Cer, but does this mean that other free sample libraries sound normally worse than that?

I am not really in time with samples, however, as you wrote there is a huge gap between this and VSL (http://www.vsl.co.at/Player2.aspx?Lang=2&DemoID=5421), however what is the main reason for the difference? Is it mostly lack of differently articulated samples, or the quality of taken samples (or is it both at 50%?)?

Thanks guys!

I hope you're getting at least decent download speeds. For some reason my uTorrent appears to be maxed out at 50kb/s upload (though I'm on a 10Mb connection), but the more seeders the faster it will get.

audioguytodd, thanks so much for providing a http mirror. Hopefully more people will offer to host it.

Perhaps I should mention that you may of course distribute this library completely freely. Also, feel free to post some news about the release e.g. on forums where people might be interested. I have notified rekkerd.org and vstplanet.com so far, will post in a couple other places as well.

Thought about posting a thread on kvr but there's usually so much negativity on those forums that I'm not sure I want to :/

There are no other free orchestral sample libraries that I'm aware of.

Edit: unless you count the free version of EWQL, which is not available anymore (not to mention that it's anything but "free" unless you mean "gratis" and nothing else). But yeah, that one sounds much better than SSO, for obvious reasons.

The main reason for the difference is that VSL is a real sampled orchestra created by a company of seasoned sample developers. SSO was created from public domain/CC samples by an amateur (me).

A big thanks for letting others use what you must have spent so much time on creating. I'm downloading now and will try it out later.

Just have to say I love that it's sfz. I'm using the sfz-player more and more (and occasionally Wusik). I love how simple, easy and efficient it is.

Thanks Sibben. Be aware though that some of the samples sound sort of odd in SFZ Player, at least on the version I have. There's some very hissy high frequencies in places, especially on the violins. First I thought it was the 24 bit bug, but this happens with the 16 bit samples as well.

Until I find a solution, lowpass is your friend.

Ok. I'll watch out. So what do you use to play sfz-files? I do have Dimension LE on some CD that came with hardware lying around somewhere. I assume it's better though there's something fishy with the GUI controls (as in some of them just not working in REAPER).

And what's the 24/16 bug?

I use Dimension LE, never had any problems with it. If you mean the GUI controls in the display (polyphony, transpose etc) they're disabled in the LE version -- at least that's what I've always assumed. However... here's a sneaky tip: turn off the GUI to access a ton of parameters

As for the bug, SFZ Player allegedly has problems with 24 bit files, i.e. a lot of ugly high frequency aliasing. But I'm starting to suspect this is a problem with sfz files regardless of bit depth.

No, they're not disabled AFAIK. I've used Dimension LE before in other hosts (Sonar LE) where it did work. I sometimes use Session Drummer 2 (because they're basically giving it away for a few bucks) and it has the same issue although it works but wonky instead. I'm assuming Cakewalk does some weird UI code that REAPER don't like.

Maybe I should switch to Dimension LE all the same too. It has some filters too and they work IRRC. I assume the CPU load is not very high on LE.

And yes, you can put it in Dim's multisamples folder but you will still need to load the sfz files manually. For SSO to show up in the program browser you'll need to save Dimension programs for each patch.

Thanks bob. It should be mentioned though that the library sounds much better in Dimension LE than in SFZ Player so if possible use the former for optimal quality.

WOW! Incredible!! Ok I am a COMPLETE novice when it comes to working with this kinda source....I have the SFz+ and I can load one instrument at a time and get some awesome REAL sounds...

NOW 1st is there anyone out there that has some cool pre-made midi files for orchestra melodies and then How would I have more than one sound loaded into the sfz+ to play those??
