OK, we're getting somewhere.
I disabled my audio interface, and it doesn't crash. I can enable the C4.
Now, I'm not sure if it's working. I select a track, press "FX" (which is the EQ button), then "lock"... nothing comes up/shows up...
Of course getting this to work properly with my audio interface enabled is another story, but I'll worry about that after I know this is working...

BTW, I'm using an M-Audio profire 2626 interface. What do you use?

Excellent !!
You need to Select a track AFTER selecting FX (EQ button).
Also, since each plug is custom mapped, you need to try it with a mapped plug.
I use the UAD-2 extensively, so a lot of those are mapped.
I also have the Softube CL1B, Softube Classic Channel, the Waves CLA, Cytomic Glue, Slate VCC, ReaEQ, and most of the Stillwell stuff mapped.

I use a Lynx Aurora 16 VT with a Lynx AES16e card -- audio only -- no MIDI

UPDATE
OK, so now it's working with my sound card (!).
Here's what I think the problem was:
I have an MCU and 2 extenders & a C4. BUT, only 3 power supplies (one is toast). So... I've been playing around with all devices. I took them all out & put only the ones I'm using (1 extender & the C4) in the list & bingo.
It seems as though even if an extender is in the list WITHOUT a MIDI PORT ASSIGNED (ie i'd set an extender to NONE, then put the C4 on the MIDI port it was using), it screws things up & makes reaper hang only IF the C4 driver is loading. VERY strange.
So, I think it's working, but I"m still having problems making the C4 actually do anything.
Here's where I'm at:
If I press |FX", and then "lock" on the C4, it now brings up the plugins on the screen (no idea why it wasn't before). But:
...Nothing on the C4 seems to do anything (except LOCK, which brings up the plugins on the computer screen). Nothing shows on the display anywhere, none of the vpots do anything, the slot up/down don't do anything.
I even tried it using a plugin that I know is mapped (UAD Neve compressor, the Glue, ReEQ, etc).

I'm presuming you mean the UAD Neve 33609 -- it is mapped.
OK, the MIDI driver in the MCU Pro is pretty strange, sometimes takes a while to "warm up". You may have to Select and DeSelect a few times to get it going, then all is well, a trick Klinke hipped me to, shake the jog wheel a little, seems to "free up" the MIDI stream.
Then the C4 itself needs a couple of Select / Deselect moves to get stuff on the display.
The 33609 is a good example of a plug where a lot of the function is mapped to the push top switches of the vPots, make sure you try the top switches as well as the rotary function, sometimes BOTH are active and do different things

Should the display on the c4 scribble strips show anything?
It doesn't seem to matter how long I have things going, the c4 doesn't ever display anything nor do any of the buttons (ie slot up/down) do anything... other than the lock button which brings up all the plugins

OK, wait.. it's "taken" after about 20 mins (!).
So, it looks like it's working!
Is there any way to get the plugin that has the focus on the C4 to have the focus on the screen? ie if it brings up 3 plugins, it'll show one on the c4 that is behind the others on the screen. tough to see what's going on (i know, adjust with your ears! - though it would be very handy to actually see for some of them.).
You are my hero
The other weird thing I notice - let's say I have the studer, LA2A and never comp on a channel. When I page through them on the C4, I might have to page through 3 instances of the studer, and same with the others. Is it just me, or is that it's behavior?
also, any way to close all the plugin windows with a button press? sure would be handy - I get about 20 plugins on the screen after adjusting a few

I just use the mouse to spread out the plug windows so that I can see them all at once -- I use 2 screens so it's not a prob, are you on a laptop?

Not quite sure what you mean here.
Some plugs take up 1 C4 row ( e.g LA2A), others take more (e.g. 33609 takes 3 rows and Studer takes 2 rows), so paging takes this into account

Each time you press Select for a track on the MCU it should close the previous set of FX windows if you still have "FX" engaged.

No, using a PC with 2 screens. Gets pretty crazy when there are more than a couple of plugins.

I mean that if I have one instance of studer, It will show up 3 times on the C4. Not 3 lines, but three complete instances.

Mine doesn't seem to do that unfortunately.
OK, so I have 2 questions:
1. How do I send you a donation?
2. Do you have a feature request list, or are you even going to be putting more work into this?
Thanks!

Looks like we have a bit more troubleshooting to do.
Try this, put 1 instance of a plugin on a track (e.g. track 2) -- say an LA2A
With "Lock" on the C4 and the "FX" (EQ) engaged on the MCU, press Select on the track (e.g. track 2)
How many instances of the LA2A do you see on the C4?
Now press the Select button on the track (e.g. track 2) again -- the C4 display should now clear and the plugin window should close.
Let me know what you find.

Thanks for the thought, but I'm just glad to contribute to the Reaper community.

Feature requests are welcomed, if they are feasible, they may be included.

One thing I forgot to mention -- you can show / hide individual plugin windows -- find the bypass (very often first row on the left) -- pushing the vPot switch toggles Bypass / Normal and turning the rotary clockwise shows and counter clockwise hides that particular FX window.

I see one instance of it. I'll try to figure out when it does more than one instance. It might be particular plugins... i'll check it out.
When I hit select again, the reaper plugin window closes, but the UI for the plugin remains.

OK, weird. If I have The Glue and LA2A on one track:
When I turn the bypass knob on LA2A it toggles the reaper plugin window on & off, but when I'm focussed on The Glue, it toggles the UI on & off.
Could that be because THe Glue is docked in the reaper plugin window, whereas LA2A is in its own window separate from the reaper plugin window?
Also... pressing select on the track (or lock) causes The Glue to disappear as you indicated above, but LA2A stays there.

Ok, I think this has to do with the VST UI config settings.
I make use of the follwing SWS/S&M extension to close the windows:
"SWS/S&M Close all floating FX windows"
Can you try that command directly and see what you get?
Now try setting the mode for the GUI (I think you right click the VST in the Add FX window) -> Run As -> and set it to:
"Embed bridged UI (may not work with all plugins, less crash resilient)"
Does that do the trick?

This seems to just close the reaper FX window for that plugin (and not the UI).

Ahh...
Now I see where I mislead you.
Left click the FX button on a track that has no FX yet.
Then Right Click the Glue in the big FX browser window.
Then Left Click Run As....

OK, that works as advertised.
Problem is, now some plugins won't come up, they just hang reaper. A good example is the studer or cambridge EQ.
... although it seems to be only with reaper projects that have had FX already added (the old way)
I'll experiment a bit & report back.
I did notice a bit of a bug BTW - The MCU (and C4) doesn't reset properly when reaper or a project is loaded.
For example, if the Lock button or FX button is lit, when I close down reaper & restart or load a new project, they stay lit. If I press them, they stay lit (as though the MCU though it was unlit at first). Then I press again to unlight, then again once more to light.

I only get this behavior if Reaper crashes.
When I shut down the MCU Faders Zero themselves and all lights and displays on the MCU / Extenders / C4 go blank.
Please let me know if you can isolate this -- I'll then attempt to fix it -- it feels something like the problem you were having earlier with the MIDI

The Studer is mapped but the Cambridge isn't -- were the Studer and Cambridge on the same track?

OK, so I haven't been able to get any consistency out of the problem I'm having, so I'm starting to keep track of things so I can see when/where it happens.
I did notice a bug (or maybe an oversight) - of the 3 pedal inputs, only one seems to do something - it turns on record for track 1. The problem is that it's only for track 1, not the selected track.
On donations, etc - I'd be willing to contribute somehow to help get a tool built to create plugin mappings. Only about 5% of my plugins are mapped for the c4, which makes it sort of a tool that has potential, but in the end isn't very useful.
OR, if you were into building a tool, I could map all the major plugins that I have & give you all the mappings so you can include them?
Let me know, I'm happy to help or donate.
thanks again Geoff.

Yes, that is the current design, it was implemented more for talkback.

Yeah, it's unfortunate you and others weren't around when I called out for user interest, the design would have probably ended up more end-user configurable.
As far as the mapping tool, the current code design does not allow for that feasibly either.
The way things work currently I need a working copy of a plugin to map it, so if you have any specific plugin you would like mapped let me know and I'll see what can be accomplished.

Yes, too bad. I had a Mackie control a few years ago, got rid of it & just recently got a new set, so I didn't even have a surface while you were doing this in the beginning.
It looks like the code grabs the mappings pre-compilation, which you'\re right - would make things difficult. It would have to be re-written to load the mappings when the driver loads to be able to modify mappings without recompiling.
Here's a list of the ones that I'd personally really like to see mapped (some of these may already be):
Cockos ReaGate
UAD:
1176LN
1176SE
Ampex ATR-102
Cambridge EQ
Cooper Time Cube
dbx 160
DM-1
DM-1L
Dreamverb
EMT140
EP-34 Tape echo
Fairchild
LA2A
LA3A
Little labs IBP
Little labs VOG
Neve 33609
Neve 33609SE
Neve 88RS
Pultec
Pultec Pro
Realverb Pro
Roland CE-1
Roland Dimension D
Roland RE-201
SPL transient designer
Studer 800
Other:
Roomverb 2
Altiverb 6
Amplitube 3
Spinner LE
GFader
PSP84
Echomania
iZotope Ozone
TrackS3
LinerPhaseGraphicEQ (slim slow slider)
MEqualizer (melda production)
SonEQ (Sonimus)
VST instruments:
Lounge Lizard
Topaz Clav
Native instruments B4
Like I said, I can contribute in any way that you need help, or via donations. I could even help pay for someone to code a mapping tool (as long as you modded to code to grab it dynamically)

Very Cool. How can I help map the others? Anything I can do, perhaps check midi params or something?

Well, I'm thinking it's about time to externalize the mappings.
That really means adding mapping functionality to the existing code.
This is no small job, but I'll tackle it bit by bit, can't give an ETA, depends on how busy things are at work, etc.
In the meantime, I could map some of the UAD stuff (by burning my demo licenses), is there a must have UAD plug or two that you need that is/are not mapped yet?

Nice. Like I said, let me know if you need any help at all, I'm happy to do whatever I can.
These are the ones I care about most in the UADs:
Cambridge
LA3A
EP34
201 Space Echo
Pultec pro
BTW, how do you like the 250 reverb? Useful?

Hi!
I'm sorry for the incredibly stupid question, but I cannot get this plugin to show on the control surfaces list... How does this install?
Thanks beforehand for any answer and for the effort on developing this.

You need to see the very first post in this thread, go to the link and download the zip file.
Place EITHER the 32 bit or 64 bit DLL in Reaper plugins directory, depending on your Reaper version, the same directory as the reaper_csurf.DLL.
Then open the PDF to see the overlay --- this shows how things are re-mapped, there are a few hints down the thread a bit on how to get the overlay transferred to fridge magnet material, if you want a reasonably long-lasting overlay on your MCU.

OK, I just mapped the LA3A and Pultec Pro.
I took the opportunity to map the Pultec Pro more like the actual panel layout, and to take up all 4 C4 rows -- a whole page, the last row is blank.
This gives a better represenation of the panel, but takes up more C4 real estate.
I wanted to give a flavor of the mapping flexibililty that's available, so you can be thinking about your custom mappings for when externalization is complete.
The only rule is a plugin is limited to 4 slots -- 32 rotaries -- for now anyway.
As well a couple of additions / changes:
Another person asked for more I/O support so there is now support for 32 mono / 64 stereo on the virtual patch bay.
The button that accomplishes this ( labelled +16 ) replaces the FX button (see overlay).
Since the FX button was really only useful to those with C4's, I think the change is warranted.
So now there are TWO button active on the C4
Lock -- is now the old FX functionality.
Marker -- shows / hides ( what the old Lock button did )
Sends now work using the virtual patch bay ( 1 - 16 only ).
If there is a send present for the slot selected on the virtual patch bay, the vPot adjusts the level for that send.

Thanks a lot Geoff. What do I do then with the rest of the material included with the download?

That is the source code, if you are a programmer or know a programmer you might use it to customize the behavior, otherwise it is not used.

Fixed a nasty bug, Pressing Scrub put channel 1 into Record
Looks like an MCU firmware issue:
Scrub 0x65
Footswitch1 0x66
Footswitch2 0x67
So says the spec, looks like 0x65 is mapped twice.
Side effect, now you can only use Footswitch2 for talkback (puts ch 1 into record while pressed).
Grab the latest.

Implemented better Send behaviour.
Selecting a vPatchBay slot now displays the Send name, if available.
When you adjust the vPot the display switches to db.
Latest available in the stash.
