I distro hop so often that I don't have many issues anymore. I know the quirks of most well known distros.

Tried to get my RME BFP to work on Ubuntu Studio today. No luck. This experiment is probably stopping here

I had a Tascam interface that didn't work on Linux for 10 years. It sucks.
You want a class compliant USB interface. Works out of the box.
If you really love your interface you'll have to use another OS.
Depends on your priorities.
I sold the Tascam because I was sick of Windows and I think Macs are cringe.
EDIT: I don't use Ubuntu Studio anymore, I haven't for a long time.
Vanilla distros are much better for me. I know how to setup the basics and it works.
I run Reaper for a few years on Linux, now I moved on.
I'll eventually end up with 100% open source.
I just need a soft clipper (I use GClip) and a limiter (I use x42)
I'm looking for open source alternatives. I've been lazy last few days.

Update 10:
I still have some plugins/synths that are not open source.
I'm not a purist, but the challenge is there, so...
Luckily my two favorite synths are open source.
Dexed and Surge XT.
I could do everything with those two.
UNFA was doing an open source limiter shoot out and apparently x42 is open source?
I asked google if x42 and GClip and GSnap (tuner) were open source, I'm lazy, but I couldn't find out lol
I'll try harder.

Update 11:
I remembered the LSP plugins. There's a clipper in there, and a limiter.
I'll keep GSnap just in case I have to mix a singer (very rare)

I think the LSP stuff is supposed to be good like but in case you're not getting on with it, there are a good few clippers and limiters from Airwindows. I really like ADClip8 and ClipOnly2.

Alongside the brilliant x42 limiter there's the x42 Auto Tune which can be automated in the same way as GSnap.

I really like the GVST plugins, I've even donated to Graham in the past because a lot of the GVSTs are really good and very usable, but if you wanna be 100% open source then the x42 and Airwindows and LSP suggestions will go far.

I have an RME BFP. Mine does work fine in Linux once it's set to CC (Class Compliant) Mode. Obviously, the RME Total Mix software won't run though (because annoyingly, it's Windows only).

x42 plugins are FOSS, gvst are proprietary.

Update 14:
I let go the soft clipper.
I made a much more dynamic track, just to see. Youtube didn't lower it.
It's -14 LUFS, I was doing -8 before.
The thing is that Youtube lowers loud tracks but Youtube Music doesn't.
So the track is a bit quieter in that platform.

To me, it doesn't seem quiet at all. The low end is really boomy on my headphones and monitors.

I really enjoy reading your updates. I think I read somewhere that the Ardour devs (as well as the one of the Radium tracker) will support CLAP only when there's official JUCE support for it.

If I can chime in with more open source LV2 plugins:
Calf plugins seemed alright when I used them, but I don't know how well maintained they are.
ZAM plugins don't have a great UI, but sound fabulous.

Strange, I've tried my mixes on various systems, and it's ok here.
Maybe it has more low end than the more compressed songs, but it doesn't sound boomy.
Is it unlistenable?
I'll keep this in mind. Thank you!
EDIT:
-14 is a bit too much dinamic range.
I think that -12 or even -10 would be a good middle ground.
Just to tighten up the low end a bit more.

Update 15:
I re-uploaded the tune, I took it to -11 LUFS
I lowered the bass and kick 3 db.
I think the masters a bit louder help me balance the music better.

I hope it's not boomy anymore.
EDIT: I'm not doing -8 LUFS anymore. It's pointless.

One thing I would miss out on by going all free is all of Reaper's free scripts.

Update 16:
I used to put my videos (a photo and the audio) together with Reaper, that did render lossles audio (PCM)
KDENlive only does lossy audio, so I've learned to replace the audio in the command line:

ffmpeg -i video.mkv -i new-audio.flac -map 0:v -map 1:a -c copy new-video.mkv

Cubase I guess...
I don't know now, but it used to have Yamaha sounds.
EDIT: but then, I'd have to deal with W$
EDIT: and only if I had a much more powerful computer.

I will answer differently, to be more accurate:
I used to fancy all of the major DAWs and plugins.
Protools, Cubase, RX, Komplete, etc.
Now I think they're overkill for me.
Komplete, for example, has a lot of stuff in there, many GB of stuff actually.
And all that software is very expensive.
I never needed any of that when I had the commercial studio, so now I need it even less.
I'm happy with what I've got now, and I have a lot of fun making my music.
I've nothing against people using fancy software, but that's not for me.
I hate dealing with licenses, and heavy files all over the place.
So, the real answer is: NONE.

It's not weird or uninspiring for me. Quite the opposite.
I can see it can be disappointing for some people.
It's work! You have to be humble.
But it pays.

Sorry for answering so late, stressful times.

BTW what kind of setup are you using Ardour on? I found it cramped on any screen under 24" and barely usable on a laptop.

Thanks!
I'm using laptop i5 8gb ram with a small screen (I guess 14") that is very good, much better than any laptop I had before. 1920x1080 and it's fine for me.
I wear contact lenses (-6) for seeing far away and for proper work I put glasses on top (the ones you get for cheap for looking close up).
Fonts are really small.

Update 19:

What's left of my studio.
The laptop needs a cigarette. But it's good, it works. I don't move it anymore.
I'm selling most of my gear (monitoring system, PA, a big midi controller, lots of cables, a few mics, headphones) and when I have some extra cash maybe upgrade the computer.
The box on top of the audio interface is a bluetooth speaker that has aux input.
For casual listening, I save a lot of power without the power amp.
All the work is done with Shure SRH840 headphones.
Everything is powered by the laptop now.

That is impressively minimalistic, wow.
But as you said before, I imagine that brings a lot of focus with it. It definitely makes me think about what I really need, so thank you for this.

Ironically, it roughly looks like the setup I started with. My laptop was a 12.5" Thinkpad X220, but my MIDI controller was a much tinier thing than yours and I found it exhausting to work on the small screen (some plugins did not fit wholly on it). I'm only patient with people. With computers I'm very short-fused, so slow workflows drive me nuts
