Default Recording auto-punch alternative

Hello, let's say I need to record and fill the gap between recordings on my screenshot.

How do I do that, so the recording stops when it hits the next item without overlapping and creating a double?
I know I can select an area and choose auto-punch, but selecting area is tricky, because it does not stuck to the ends and starts of items.

Sounds like

Recording Mode "Auto Punch Selected Items"

could apply here.

In your case, since you are trying to fill in negative space, you'd need an item to select. One option might be to copy one of your existing items into that spot, stretch it to snap to either side, and then reduce the volume of it to -inf for easy visual identification.

I guess, instead of copying it's possible to ctrl+drag to draw an empty item.

Would be better if there were an option for snapping the selection boundary to items and vice versa. If this already exists, I'd like to know. Also, a script that can "select area between selected item and next item" would be nice too. Those are too useful, and simple to have to do it another way me thinks.
