Default are there guidelines for individual midi notes

When we shift items around there are guidelines front and back so help align the items across tracks

Is there a setting for guidelines for individual midi notes so that it is easier to align them vertically? In particular for the inline editor when aligning specific midi notes to peaks in an underlying waveform or spectral view.

Nah, but you could try using the move cursor to transient actions. That way the edit cursor will find your transients instead of your eyeballs and your edits will just snap right to the cursor. You'll need to dial in the transient sensitivity and there's an action to open that window as well. Just search the actions list.

thanks - I will use that sometimes - other times just eyeball. It is interesting one has to eyeball a lot of times to get the effect right coz of attack characteristics of the sounds and what is wanted as an end result

You could use a crosshair app.

maybe this is help

you can set the grid of the midi ed to just about anything you can imagine... so you can set it way up temporarily and zoom in ...should help you align notes

Thanks and I do like the way the grid (or quantising) can be anything , but I am thinking more about aligning notes that are far away in pitch eg a c8 and an e1 - that can be improved by only showing note rows that are being used , or using markers. But guide lines like one has for items would be a lot better for when one isn't using the grid or quantised music

For aligning to a spectrogram or waveform guide lines are better as well.

From an interface consistency pov anything that can be moved should have guidelines unless there is a good reason not to

have you ever looked into the midi list editor view?

you can certainly perfectly align them there...
