From Sonar,mainly because:
* Better routing
* Channel splitting
* Less CPU overhead
Price wan't an issue. I'd have switched even if it had cost as much as Sonar, but don't tell Justin that.

From Cubase SX,
because Reaper was light, quick (especially starting up), and not as buggy, and I didn't have to pay huge money for updates/fixes.

Came from PT, searching for:
- freedom from software+hardware bundling
- realtime rendering (yes, ladies and gentlemen, the "industry standard" force you to 1x)
- capability to undo mixer actions (as above)
- freedom in routing signals !!
- a nice pricing
- a nice support

came from Cubase 4. I like the reaper workflow. Cubase has too much that i will never use and the update to v5 hadn't anything I coudln't already do.
Mostly better workflow though. Now in the process of building 64bit DAW to run Reaper.
the Reaper manual is also excellent. Would be nice if we could buy a hardcopy.

because it embodies all I need to cook my home made audio stuff, it finally plays fair on the budget side, it looks cool (and it counts...), it works smoothly.
It's pretty impressive how the essential interface of the whole environment of reaper focused me to easily get the basics of audio, sort of wysiwyg,
with no bells and whistles to distract my compulsive parameters tweaking obsessions...
in few words, I recently tried out the voxengo voxformer demo, great plugin indeed, which I could replicate (not perfectly, of course...) chaining up a few of reaper bundled plugins & freeware stuff..
just my own experience, but if I even had the chance to afford a big boy, I'd surely keep my Reaper and save money for holydays under the real sun...

From PT LE
Non-real time rendering -- PT STILL forces rendering in real time.
Play / Pause issue was absolutely killing my workflow.
Auto delay compensation.
In the process I ended up finding a bunch of other cool stuff
-- routing
-- great plugs
-- extremely effective software team
-- great manual
-- great pricing / update structure
-- much lighter on the CPU
-- lots of other stuff I can't think of right now

I came from Cubase SX 3. Got pi55ed off with Steinberg expecting me to pay for updates to fix bugs. I found Reaper in early version 2 and never looked back.

From Sonar because someone finally made my Yamaha 01x work the way it was intended to, also with the poor pound against the dollar Sonar did'nt represent good value for money as I already paid for Dimension pro which they gave away in Sonar 9 so the rest just was'nt worth the upgrade price.

I wanted to go legal way with software. Reaper was the only host that has/had fair price. I used Audition previously, and since installing Reaper i never touched Audition again.
+ Price
+ No copy protection
+ Easy to use
+ Regular updates
+ Fast/Light
+ Support for multiple cores
+ Forum

Because everything about it appealed to me.
When I compare it to the other software... well, there's just no comparison to me.

from vegas / sonar
I loved vegas but needed midi and got tired of jumping over to sonar just to do some quick sequencing and then back to vegas.
I got tired of sony's desperate attempts to keep acid/vegas as separate products even though they so logically belonged together.
I posted a final, exhausted rant on the vegas forums and got a reply from pipelineaudio who said something like: dude..check out reaper..that's where all us vegas refugees are now.
so i did..

from cubase sx.
reaper is simple, logical, instinctive, ligth, affordable. this forum is great. the philosophy of the developers is delightful.
like others have said ,cubase is full of stuff i will never use. cubase is more complicated to set up.
and of top of all REAPER is COOL!!

Got sick of Cubase and the "buggy bloat", so I stopped buying their extortion-ware.
Then I gave Tracktion a go, and I liked it, but then Mackie bought 'em and it proceeded to get buggier and buggier. I feel like because of the desperation to add new bullet points to the box, Mackie lost sight of what was really important to Tracktion users.
So at one point, I couldn't get Tracktion working properly on my machine, I turned to Reaper in desperation. I had a project that HAD to get done. Reaper did the trick, and then some! So I fell in love, and I've never looked back.
Recording is actually a pleasant experience with Reaper. It doesn't crash, it doesn't fight me every step of the way, and it just works the way I expect it to work. It is also "deep" enough to handle complex recording tasks. Love love love it.
That said, I WILL probably give Propellerheads' "Record" a try, but that's mostly because I already own and use Reason. But even so, I don't expect to move away from Reaper as my main DAW.

Iv only been playing with it for a couple of days, but I think Im going to make the switch. Reaper just feels more intuitive than Cubase, add to that the small size + low CPU load and its a real winner.

I also came from Sony Vegas, who so early on sold out to commercialism bloat. I hated having my audio software go almost entirely video right in front of me. I was annoyed to have to install all of the .Net crap on my PC just to get it to install, even if I didn't have any use for Media Manager. Bugs, TONS! Bloated, Definitely! Ugly! Lack of forum anything. Time between adding anything of use....HUGE!
Basically I came to REAPER looking for something similar in work flow to Vegas, but leaner and better (yeah Better) is what I was hoping for. Love REAPER. The forum has helped me with any questions, and the developers have always fixed any problems I have had with it.
A+ Software (if there was a higher grade you'd deserve it JCS!)

Cubase->REAPER
Got tired of bugs, far in between fixes, updates (or upgrade costs), negative responses on requests, etc. So I found REAPER and tried it - that was it! Once I completed any work I had using cubase, I gave it away to some kid I did some tracking for, and now he works in a Nashville cubase furnished studio. And of which is thinking seriously of converting to REAPER as well - heheh...

I've seen a few ex-FL users here (I think that JBM used FL studio).
I've never seen an ex-Samplitude user in this forum though.

Because
Because Logic Express didn't exist on PC...
1989 : Pro-24 on Atari
1990 : Performer (no audio then) on Mac Plus / IIvx / 6100
1992 : Cakewalk
2006 : Logic Express 7
2007 : REAPER
I'm a hobbyist. In front of a DAW about 10 days/year but since using REAPER, I'm reaching 12 days (precisely... thanks to REAPER About box)
And m first post about REAPER awareness was well received by Justin...Made me buying instantly!

Well I haven't fired up FL Studio in err... a year or more I guess. Mostly because I just never got the hang of it. Reaper works like I expect to work. FL was frustrating to no end. Then again most of my stuff is audio with just a few VSTi/DXi's sprinkled here and there.

I use it, because it has the most metal sounding name of all the hosts out there.
That and stability, flexibility, no dongle, and it fits on a USB stick!

EnergyXT1.4 --> Reaper. Because the whole concept of Justin and all appealed to me, and as I always used Orion I first used it mainly for audio. It is simply superb, and for sure not only for audio these days!

'Cause Logic 5.5 on Windows was getting long in the tooth and VST's were becoming incompatible with it... Reaper was a killer app for mixing and once I mixed an album with it, I couldn't go back to anything else.
Although it's still not great for MIDI composition (just my opinion of course). It's useable, but not enjoyable. Brilliant for audio though. I love the friendliness of the forum, the quickness of the updates, the small footprint, the routing, and the Cockos philosophy.

coming from the old acid 2.0 and logic 5.1...
them I´ve used acid, of course, and sonar or cubase for vsts, midi implementation and others advances.
but acid 6 and 7 doesn´t have all than I was hoping and there is no cubase releases for 4,5...
sonar 8 is really powerful too, but faults in some things than acid does much better.
but now, in reaper, I can do anything ala acid with the rest of reaper...
reaper seems a lot of difficult at the first time, and is needed to contact with others users to learn it, but I think one time you learn the first steps reaper is really good and I don´t need acid yet, neither sonar or cubase sx3 (others 4 and 5 are only for millionarie people not for learns)
reaper has a great future just in front of the way...but there is still some defficients obviously...but no problem, reaper rules...

Same here. I was introduced to the magical world of recording and mixing via an...uh, "unpaid" version of Cubase SX3. After getting the hang of it I felt like actually buying some recording software. I didn't much like Cubase, but Reaper is really nice. I was quite happy to pay for Reaper.

Switched from Cubase LE.
I liked Cubase but had major stasbility issues (I'm recording on a box with a 1 Ghz AMD processor and 768 megs of RAM). I heard REAPER was light on the CPU so I gave the dmoe a try.
I was an immediate convert and happily paid for a license after the demo period. No crashes and on top of that I was blown away by the signal routing and the included plugins (particularly REAverb).
I am now a fanboy.
BTW I am really digging version 3. I'm very impressed with the changes/additions.

Switched from Cubase. I found Cubase to be somewhat "depressing" in the gui department.

Man you've been a fount of wisdom and blessing here!
Such humility's kinda cool
I've worked with Cubase and Sonar and Cool Edit when I was a fulltime player. Reaper came up on Google search and I've been playing with it since. I spend more time lurking the forum than I do playing

Previously used Cakewalk (pre-Sonar), then Vegas 2.0 (pre-Sony/video focus), then Cubase SX (1), then Cubase SX3.
The short answer is that Reaper does almost everything Cubase could do at a much better price (especially for a non-pro like me). But as I looked more into Reaper, I really respected the philosophy behind the software development. This is the first time I feel like I am respected as an end user.
The focus here is clearly more on making the best possible product than it is on squeezing every last dime out of the user base. I think in the end, this will pay off big time. Some "pros" write off Reaper now but I think the platform they are building is far more flexible and the dev team has shown great commitment to constant improvements/upgrades.
There are things that I still feel are missing but I have faith that the devs will do them at some point, and will probably do them "right". There is also great community support. I particularly like Klinke's MCU plugin, not to mention the other fine extensions out there.
