Default One of my first...

...made in Reaper.

I recorded THIS about a year ago when I was first learning how to use Reaper. Just wanted to share it here to perhaps get some feedback in comparison to some of my more recent "productions" posted there.

When listening to this myself I feel my newer stuff has become too over produced in quality. Personally I like (and miss) the raw sound of this early piece. I don't exactly know what I did (or didn't do) to achieve that sound. I'll have to go back and look it over.

Nalyd,

Nice piece.

As far as your new sound goes: yes, open Reaper and go over the tracks of this piece since you like the sound so much.

You need to look at the plugins and vsts that were used, as well as any fx, compressors, eq's etc.

I once had this sort of problem with a bass sound that I seemed to have lost. I went back through my stuff and eventually found that the original settings and placement were very slightly different, but it made such a difference to the overall sound.

Incremental changes often lead to a big effect.

It also pays to decide which instrument(s) you wish to be your favourite lead -- in order to end up with a recognisable sound that is you. In my case, this often led to more creativity, rather than being a constraint.

Best of luck.

This is rather excellent, very nice sounding drums and delays(sounds like that mod delay thingie from POD farm). You have a thing for pleasant sounding grooves.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words.

zeekat, it's funny you mention the drums because when I here it now it's the drum track that bothers me most. I like the raw sound of them but I don't like the playing. There are only parts I like. I wish I had focused more on expanding them. The whole song was improvised fairly quickly with all first takes so it's no wonder it sounds as it does. But it is what it is now. I don't usually go back to a closed project unless it's still really new in my head and I'm still in the mixing process of it.

Simple groove fits it, fancy fills and breaks not necessary Plus I hear fair amount of cool subtle stuff there, ghostnotes or what they're called etc. just enough stuff to give the piece a lot of life.

Sound alone is great indeed, that snare is awesomely snappy.
