Default pre-FX volume knob or fader

Hi!

I can create an envelope lane for pre-FX volume of a track or I can change the volume of individual audio items. But how can I adjust the track's pre-FX volume with a knob or fader. I tried various layout options but couldn't enable any UI element for it.

Am I missing something?

As a workaround I could probably create an envelope lane, set it to a single value and hide it forever.

Or is there another way?

It's been requested and discussed quite a bit, but as far as I know, there are only workarounds.

What I do is use item gain for pre-fx volume with audio, and insert Satson (console emulation plugin with nice metering) in the first FX slot after virtual instruments when using MIDI.

You could also probably use a very simple JSFX gain plugin, click on the plugins volume control, click parm at the top of the plugin window, then select "show in track controls". If you save it as a template you can save time in the future.
