Default Windows-10, final thughts? Time is short...

So, to upgrade or not?

My biggest concern are a few drivers, like my Komplete Audio 6 drivers.

Only got 5 days, what do you all think.

Right now I've got Windows-7 Professional and I don't know much about setting up OS systems, is it possible to have both OS available on my SSD drive?

EDIT: Oh forgot to ask, if I reserve Win-10 can I install it when I want to, regardless of the date?

Just how does this work, I'm assuming they will put it on my computer, ready to install, but can I decide when to install it?

Aah, just found this in MS:

Quote:
You’ll get a notification after July 29, 2015 once Windows 10 is downloaded to your device. Install it right away or pick a time that’s good for you.
So I assume I can install it when I'm ready? Or not install if I decide not too?

you have to wait until tape op comes to interview you about the benefits of digital recording - they will come to your studio as you prepare to talk about the benefits of digital

and then windows will install

According to Them Wot Gnoe, it will download itself but not install unless you have auto-install enabled. I hope!

I will prolly put the net machine on 10 straight away since I know everything I use on that machine already works in 10.
Including my Babyface!

No help here, and only Windows user, BUT .... have been running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Insider Preview) for a few weeks. No issues so far with Reaper 4.78 and also ran a bit with V5.0xx. Also running all Spectrasonics (no NI), IvoryII, XLN, Jamstix3, and all seem solid.

Good luck with your timing and dual boots !

Humm, so where is this "auto-install"? Heh heh, maybe a check box like "Portable Install"?

Thanks Thom, I didn't stop to think about NI, I wonder, will it work?

The free upgrade offer is for a year so I won't be installing it until 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours and 59 minutes, give or take, unless everyone else (read: the guinea pigs) wholeheartedly endorse it before that.

I reserved a copy for my Windows 7 / 8 computers but do not plan to install immediately after July 29, I'll wait and see what others say before making the jump.

I've been using the preview of 10 for a few months now and it has been working well for me. In my experience so far, if it ran on windows 7/8 then it will run on 10. There has been one exception as for a short time Pace ilok did not work correctly but that was only briefly and months ago.

"Once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge,"

Everything I've read thus far states Microsoft has yet to "explicitly define, supported lifetime"

If your SSD has two partitions and you BUY Win10, then you can create a dual boot configuration.

If you upgrade Win7 to Win10 for free, your Win7 licence will be converted to a Win10 licence as far as I know. So no dual boot.

well, actually, dual boot should be fine if you, as stated, buy another license.

i had a reservation for w10 but cancelled it when i found out there'd be an iso available, supposedly, on the same day as the release. that would allow for a clean install.

one could, presumably, use their existing disk to fresh install whatever w/version they currently have and use the iso on another partition. or, they could resize their partition to free up space for a w10 partition. they'd have to sort out the activation on running things, though, as that would involve the licensing issue. i'd assume that, as long as you didn't try to use the old system, you could activate the w10 system.

there really shouldn't be any rush as there's an entire year allowed to watch others sort this kind of thing out before jumping in.

Okay, thanks everybody.

So the consensus is to get it but don't install for a while, that sounds pretty good to me.

I cancelled my order, the very thought of my favorite software not loading give me shudders,

I have to much music software and have a very stable setup with W7 ultimate, yes I think would be nice to have W 10 but better to have every thing working when you boot up.

You can always just reinstall your old Windows 7 or 8 if 10 isn't doing it for you, btw.

I for sure will be using 10. I've used it a bit at my friend's place and it is very snappy and I'm digging the new features.

Windows Explorer is a bit over-the-top with it's new Word-esque drop down strip, but I will probably make great use of it.

On one of my machines, I've rolled back and fort a couple of times. AKA, went back to Windows 8, back to 10, back to 8 using the restore previous version feature. Took about 25 minutes to revert from 10 to 8 and it was flawless.

Point being, be smart and don't try to outsmart the OS by cleaning, optimizing and disabling everything under the sun so that you don't screw the pooch and prevent one's self from being able to easily revert if needed.

The update will download before getting installed. Once downloaded though it needs to be installed within 3 months or any further updates will be halted until you do. This may sound worse then it is and it actually makes sense as you are registered and thus expected to update.

You can always choose to dual boot, with WIN10 there is no need for dual partitions, you can simply create a VHD (virtualHD) image of you system disk and boot the previous OS from that, provided your PC runs an UEFI BIOS.

I have been on Windows 10 since the first Technical Preview last year and have not seen any real issues.

Does someone have a Focusrite Liquid56? How do the drivers and MixControl behave on Windows 10? Also, if you happen to use a Novation product with Automap support, how does it behave?

Thanks in advance.

interesting. thanks for that, paulheu.

@novaburst: there's an option to just download and not install so the background installing thing can be opted out of.

bottom line i'm hearing is that, if it runs on 7/8 it runs on 10 and compatibility is very good.

Since then, only the Windows Insider emails that I had subscribed to.

Yes, but I absolutely hate the prerequisites:

If you want to use the free upgrade and do a clean install of Win 10, you first need to do an upgrade install, then link your lokal user account to a Windows Live Account so that your Windows serial gets to that account.

After all that hassle you can do a clean install but need to use your Live ID as the first account on Win 10.

It might help if posters who say they have had no problems state what they are using that presents with no problems.

For example, saying that whatever works with win7 will work with win10 is sort of helpful but it would be good to know just what the 'whatever' is. We all have different stuff I think.

Reaper version, interface, controllers - the stuff that matters.

Because Win10's architecture is much closer to 8.1 than to 7.

This is a good thing in the long run, that they're turning Windows into a service. For multiple reasons, but mostly because it benefits everyone: users, developers, applications. You always get the latest features, and developers don't need to wait years for the new monolithic version to actually start using those new features.

This will leverage the development pace between Win and OSX, with the clear difference of Windows being a LOT more backwards compatible (simply because they HAVE to be, considering that they're still used on about 80% of all computing devices in the world, some of them in very crucial areas like medicine, military, research facilities, automation facilities, etc.).

Default Windows-10, final thoughts? Time is long!

Exactly as long as you wait to that moment you will install.
I don't understand all that hipe and tension.
If you have a running system, lean back and have a look at all the crazy ones who will test the next version for you :-)

Misc100: You are right about it being helpful if those of us who are NOT having any issues state what we are using.

In my case it is 100% RME for interfaces - one pci, one USB.
One pc is a win 8.1pro 64bit laptop with i5 and 8gb ram - I installed the early pres up to when it went public beta and had very few issues.
The last technical preview build was spot on with zero problems.
Because of this I havent bothered with the public preview releases.

The other machine went on Win10 tech pre later in the cycle because it is my studio desktop.
i7 with 16gb running win8.1 pro 64bit. Again, no problems at all. A very boring beta test experience frankly.

Not sure why anyone is worried about Win8.1 at this stage in the game. The underlying architecture of 7 8 8.1 and ten is pretty much the same.
If it works in 7 the chances of it NOT working in 10 are vanishingly slim at this stage.
Go have a look at the forum in the windows insider forum and you will see what sort of real issues there are with 10. Nothing that I can see at this stage that will affect us as DAW users.,

Time is short, only 5 days left?

Did I get it all wrong, it was my understanding that the reservation is for the impatient and I have one year to decide to upgrade, whether I reserve or not? Is the reservation mandatory and I couldn't upgrade for free if I didn't reserve in time?

That sounds a bit unlikely to me.

A different question: Once I do the upgrade, I would like to change to a new, bigger SSD. Will I need to do the upgrade on my current system drive and then migrate, or will it be possible to just install win 10 on the new drive (still unauthorizing my current win 8.1 OS, of course)? What do you think would be the bestest (most uncomplicated) way to go about it?

You have one year to reserve W10 for free, is how I understand it.

You should likely install W10 on the new drive cleanly, that will be possible.

@ ED: That's what I was hoping for, thanks So I will let that reserve thingy just sit there until Win 10 has settled a bit and stay calm while I read about its teething troubles
And watch SSD prizes fall another bit, I hope.

Yep, for WDM/WASAPI only. Not ASIO - Microsoft has nothing to do with ASIO since ASIO is owned by Steinberg/Yamaha.

I honestly hope there will be much less of that compared to W8 release... MS got very serious about their testing, they have three levels of that now: inside MS, fast lane, slow lane. Proper agile development where they can respond to user feedback much faster (previously, betas were monolithic and were basically the final product, there was no time to implement any feedback up until the next SP). I wish them all the best, they're really on the verge of something great here.

Some of us over at Reddit: Audio Engineering and Gears tried to drum up support for native Asio on the Windows feature request site. Maybe that was a bit naive but we still tried.
