Default inline midi editor bug

hi, this may be a bug or unintended or just naming i do not understand

If I overlay a midi item onto a waveform using the inline editor and then set the midi item settings to "show spectrogram" then the inline editor background becomes transparent so that I can see the waveform with midi notes over the top. This works really well for aligning notes to a waveform but there is no spectrogram involved (how could a midi item even have a spectrogram?) which makes this seem like a bug/unintended.

I really want to have this functionality but maybe the name needs to change away from "spectrogram"

Spectrogram is obviously available only for audio items.

In terms of the Reaper settings it is also available for the inline midi editor by right clicking and sets background transparency - which is really useful, but misnamed (or a bug)

Hmmm, that option doesn't change the opacity of the inline MIDI editor over here. Sounds to me like you're talking about docked MIDI editor, then setting the docker opacity...

In any case, you get that menu when you right-click at the top of inline MIDI editor - that's because it's "media item context" menu, which applies to ALL items, it doesn't care if it's audio, or MIDI or whatever.

definitely happening in the inline midi editor here.
Make new midi item and put in a couple of notes.
Make new track and insert an audio file.
Drag midi item on top of the audio file and it covers the audio waveform up
right click in midi file top section and go settings > show spectrogram
inline midi sets background transparent and nothing happens to the underlying waveform

This is tested on a brand new stock portable install.

but there are a whole bunch of interactions going on where you can then set the spectrogram of the waveform to on and the inline midi editor goes opaque again. And others which I have not documented. But there is definitely something buggy here

Ah, I see. It depends on item mix behavior (Project Settings->Advanced).

yes, well spotted - the spectrogram "switch" working on two of those item mix settings seems unintended. Anyway, it is a useful feature for me at least
