Default Dynamics and the DR meter

Hey guys - just completed a project (critique welcome ) but am concerned why the song is 'too dynamic'. I've recently done Ian Shepherd's Mastering course and he advocates going for a DR of 8. Mine has a DR of 13.

Is this a good or a bad thing and can anyone suggest why this may be so and how to go about correcting it?

The song is a cover of Bowie's The man who sold the world and is the first song if you click the link 'my music is here' in my signature.

Thanks!

Having a high dynamic range is not necessarily a problem, but if you are looking for less, the quickest way would be to just increase the gain before your master limiter. You'll probably need to adjust a few settings on it to stop it sounding distorted.

A bit more compression on your individual tracks could potentially help reduce dynamic range. Your track sounds good as it is though.

13 dB of DR isn't high, it's medium at best - most everything I create lives in 12-14 dB of DR. 8 dB of DR is terrible IMHO if the music is dynamic in nature aka drums or other dynamic instruments are involved. Smash it down to 8 dB (via limiting or compression), if you like that sound keep it, otherwise, go with what sounds best. My guess is your ears already gave you the answer.
