Reaper doesn't come with much by way of instruments. Go find some good free ones

Reaper does not, by and large, come with any instruments. (There is a couple of very basic synth's if I remember correctly, but I do not use them.)

People who use Reaper simply buy their own VST's, or download any of the thousands of free instruments available on the net.

There is even a great "Going all freeware" thread, which you can search for, which has many of the best ones listed.

Reaper is a recording application that was created specifically with saxophonists in mind. It was assumed from the start that those using the program would have their own saxophone. It is also becoming a mainstay for Xylophonists and Oboists. Coincidentally, it was featured in this month's edition of Modern Oboe.

However, the people who posted before me seem to be on to something as well. Maybe I'll put down my oboe and check into these "Virtual" thingies they're talking about.

I've been using Reaper almost exclusively for recording the cornet and piccolo trumpet so it does have a slightly wider range of applications than it has been given credit for.

I am kind of with the OP though... I was under the impression that Reaper came with a real tenor saxophone with the purchase of the full commercial license. Where's my sax?

Lol

I don't think anyone mentioned that reapers price reflects the none inclusion of instruments and thus allows you money to go buy some nice third party ones

Or choose from the many excellent free ones found on the BPB site posted above

Besides the reflection in price it also allows for a tiny installer that installs a sleek and stable app that can actually run from a usb key.

As a lowly non sax playing guitarist who records primarily live acoustic/electric musicians, I have approximately zero need for virtual instruments beyond drum triggers. I am grateful that reaper is not burdened by the bloat and instability of a DAW like sonar from which I am a longtime refugee.

Oi! You got something against banjos then? My first ever pro gig was on banjo!

And before you say anything else, I have also spent many happy hours restoring Accordions, Concertinas and Bandoneons.

favorite accordion joke:

our accordion player went to the Mall this weekend.
she had her accordion in the back seat of her car.
and she accidentally left the rear windows open.

when she got back to her car.............................
there were 3 more accordions in there.................

It comes a really basic synth (ReaSynth, or ReaSyn... something like that) and a couple of samplers. Other than that, no. That's why the download is so small.

A good, curated list of free instruments can be found here on the Bedroom Producer's Blog. And if you're looking for something in particular, just ask here.

Insert a track, click 'FX' on that track, choose instruments or filter the list for ReaSynth, ReaSynDr, and ReaSamplOmatic5000, which are a synth, a drum synth, and a sample player, respectively. The sample player is ok, though somewhat limited. The others are a bit rubbish.

I'm working on some links, but here a few:

http://www.djemberecords.com/links.html

There are some great free synths available. That and a collection of free SF2 and SFZ soundfonts and you have more than you need and instruments and FX that you like and fit your music. It's not immediate and takes a day or two -- but better than a bunch of junk you will not use.

Here they are

http://bedroomproducersblog.com/free-vst-plugins/

Scroll down to Part 3: Best Freeware VST Instruments

There are VSTi's in that list that are as good (or better) as anything that ships bundled with any DAW out there.

Enjoy.

Why should Reaper come with any instruments? You of course bring in your own voice, guitars, bass, keyboards and drums!

.

Speaking of which...

What do you get if you form a band consisting of an accordion player, a banjo player and a bagpiper?
