what is an ample amount of RAM to prevent any memory problems in operating reaper?

It depends on what you're doing... Any "basic" Windows computer (or Mac) can record/edit 2-channel stereo. (Some "small" Linux computers might not cut it. i.e. I think the Raspberry Pi runs a version of Linux and I don't think it's suitable for audio production.)
More tracks, higher resolution, multiple effects, multiple virtual instruments, etc. can put a "strain" on any computer. So, it's kinda' hard to predict and depending on your system and what you're doing RAM may not be the bottleneck.

4 to 32GB would be pretty normal I guess.
But that's not to run Reaper, that's for everything else.

Thank you both. Im running one vst but multiple tracks and multiple effects with 4GBs of RAM. I cant say for certain but there have been a few times when I had some problems with everything running. It probably wouldnt hurt to go 8GBs.

I'm usually ok on Reaper maxing at 4.5GBram.
But, when I started using Avis Sibelius it's not so efficient so I see 5.5Gb somethimes.
If you only have 4GB I'd recommend an upgrade,
but depends very much on what you're doing.

I run 32bit Reaper out of habit and never ran out of 3.5G or whatever of RAM it can use - heaviest thing I use is a drum sampler, rest is amp sims, VAs and effects. IMO the problem starts only when using larger sample based instruments, effect plugs or VAs have pretty small memory footprint.
Memory's cheap though, get like 16 gigs anyway

Bear in mind that the other limitation is going to be the speed and number of cores in your cpu.

I run 32GB RAM also
I would never go lower in this day and age.

When I upgraded from 8gb to 16gb, I noticed a significant difference. I use a lot of VSTs, though, so you might be able to get away with 8gb if you don't use a lot of system-heavy plug-ins.
