The biggest problem of the FLStudio speech synth is making it
speak languages other than english, like German,Russian,Japanese, etc. that rely on using pure vowels and hard consonants.Too hard to make the Fruity speech synth do this. For example,I can't make it "speak" the German word "Kanalisation" correctly.
"Kawnawleesawtseeon" sounds too weird to be useful.
Also,a good free vocoder can help with this kind of stuff. The Fruity one is not useful for making that vintage 80's "computerized/robotic" voice, like Kraftwerk's or that used in early 90's "Electronica/Techno" music for example.

I'm not sure if I fully see what you're looking for. But I got some good experiences with the TTS (text to speech) functionality of Wavepad, a good free wav and mp3 editor ( http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html) . It you need German or other languages, just download the needed language components ( http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads/user.asp) and use them in Wavepad. You can treat the actual sound file in Wavepad itself (supports DX, VST) or use a free VST vocoder in REAPER such as:
http://www.sonicspot.com/trashcoder/trashcoder.html

I've now had a chance to try "GMulti" and it's very easy to use with nice features like width control on each band.

SIR Impulse Response Processor
http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html
A great free effect plugin, with more power and possibilties than Wizoo Verb (250 bucks). The best free real reverb tool you can get, I suppose.
Be sure to check the impulse responses file depository:
http://noisevault.com/index.php?opti...tory&Itemid=29
Start downloading some Lexi impulses, load the waves in SIR and see what it does to your sound. Amazing. Also check the cabinets etc. to perfectionize guitar sounds. And... too much to mention.
And if you like experiments, you can try out loading any wav file you like... Well, endless possibilities; a superb reverb tool that can be transformed in a versatile synth.
(I edited this post twice, a bit unsure about the actual quality and usability of the plugin. Tried out various things now; it's simply great).

I think reverbs like SIR can work very well if the original material is pretty dry - otherwise there is a danger that you'll be listening to two acoustics at once - the original one and the convolution-produced one, which can unsettle your ears.

I'm being lazy and haven't checked whether http://miksybrandt.panicnow.net/plugins.htm has been mentioned before - GTG synths and quite persuasive drum samplers (all freeware I think?).

"Mr Ray 21" VSTi within Reaper required me to restart the PC from the front panel button - totally locked it up. Gulp - now getting file system checking message from XP during startup that I've never seen before! Ungulp - all seems working now but I've deleted that instrument from my collection.
Just set up single FX rack with all the VSTi's I can find in one setup (though all unticked except one!). Makes it easy to quickly select the one I want.

KT Granulator is quite cool too. Great for wicked fx.
TAURUS Great Mono Bass Synth
Stereo Tools is a very useful Channel Strip tool (Swap channels, Gang PAN, MONO/STEREO switch, MID/SIDE)
NuBi LE & Spinner LE Really great sounding Hammond emulation plus a leslie cabinet. Also they look very tasty, especially Spinner.
Ultra Phazer 1 of the best Phasers I've seen.
Crazy Diamond Says it all, no?
UGO's Synths They're all good.
Even the free FX & Instruments are becoming really good and effective now. I remember some time back many of them weren't all that great, but this is changing.
Regards
Raphael

For me, presets are good as a basis for sound creation and processing, or for setting different versions for same task, but I have to tweak them, I'm a tweaking maniac!

This one is not free - but I'm so gobsmacked by the Rayspace reverb that I'm actually going to pay money for it, which isn't like me!! I've never heard a reverb which always sounds so natural and believable when used on acoustic music (well, unless you really stuff up the settings). Very well worth trying, and the interface is quite addictive - though you would be well advised to read through the short help file to get the best results. http://www.quikquak.com/ is the site.

I hadn't realized RaySpace was so inexpensive! I'll have to look into it, as I've heard nothing but GLOWING reviews from all corners.
Here's a pretty nice little multiband compressor (the guy calls it a "Dynamic Equaliser"). Sounds pretty good, and it does upward compression and downward expansion.

Here's something I've just come across - a CD I recorded way back - listen to a couple of these excerpts and you'll hear why at the end of the day there's no reverb like the real thing. I recorded it in a South London church using a single pair of mics via a preamp direct to DAT and it was edited and mastered with no eq or effects at all - those were the days!
http://www.emusic.com/album/10601/10601155.html has it. [Not a commercial plug as I have no further financial interest in this].

Art, that's the first time I hear someone refer to Shostakovich's opus 34 as just something Indeed a great sound, very well recorded. Did you ever happen to record his op. 87 as well? - which I think is one of THE compositional masterpieces of the last century. It was written for Tatjana Nikolayeva, who plays it in a cool but heartbreaking manner, and therefore it doesn't even matter too much that the actual (recording) sound of her performance are very much below average (now I know: she should have asked Art Evans to handle her sound).
I would think that it's mighty difficult to get a good grip on reverb control when recording solo piano in a church, the piano being a chamber instrument, op. 34 being chamber music. You must be a real professional, and a very good one. Colin Stone, the performer, isn't too bad either - but Nikolayeva is I think another and more rare division.
Thanks for the info & link.

No to op.87 - but I did edit the complete, live Beethoven sonatas performed by Tatjana Nikolayeva, release on the Olympia label. The first I think to be released by a female pianist. The opportunities for editing were relatively few - we simply had the masters from the live performances with no patches, so all one could do was to take tiny bits from repeats where necessary, and where possible. The great majority were necessary because it appeared that if a member of the audience had a very bad cough, the concert managers invited them to sit nearest to the mics and to make as much disturbance as possible. Perhaps I am being unsympathetic to those who have to endure the Russian winter.
I also recall being in the audience at her final Wigmore Hall concert in London - she received a huge bunch of flowers at the end, and then decided to play an encore - she laid the flowers actually inside the piano, and of course it then didn't function very well, requiring her to stop and remove them, much to the amusement of the very affectionate English audience.
Sorry guys, getting off topic...

Here's a link to a great set of FREE VST plugs ...well, they're "donationware", actually. I have used the GComp and GComp2 compressors, the GRevDly (reverse delay), the GDuckDly (ducking delay) and tried out GSnap (AuoTune knockoff) and I have to say that these things ROCK!! Check 'em out and see for yourself!
