Mountain Lion/Tascam US-144mkII Playback not working
Hello,
I upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion
I also upgraded my Tascam US-144mkII to driver version 2.10 and firmware version 2.03
I can still record with Reaper, but playback is not working at all. If I use the system audio, playback works fine.
Can anyone help me? Thanks a lot!

ok, i have some more informations here.
this is the first time i use a mac, because since last week i always used a windows laptop (or ubuntu), but here it is what happen to me:
- integrated sound card and reaper, output works perfectly.
- integrated sound card and logic, output works perfectly.
- integrated sound card and garageband, output works perfectly.
- tascam us144 mkII and reaper, output doesnt workin, and when i play start reaper is on "buffering" for all the time without any output.
- tascam us144 mkII and logic, output works perfectly.
- tascam us144 mkII and garageband, output works perfectly.
So, it seems to be a compatibility problem between Mountain Lion, Reaper and US-144mkII, and not a driver problem from tascam.
I dont have worries, soon i will have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, and i will leave the tascam, but for now...i need it
Pierre, can you try the same trick? so we can see if it's sure it's a compatibility problem?

Hi! I think I have the same problem, but with an Alesis Multimix8 USB2.0 FX. When I try to play my project, it says "[Buffering]" for a really long time and then starts to play with a _really_ bad stutter.
Switching playback to my display or system audio works perfectly.
This problem started after I upgraded to latest Reaper (4.261). I had been using 4.151 with no problems prior to upgrading.
I'm using a Mac with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and latest driver and firmware from Alesis.
Edit: Also no problems playing through an ESI Audio UGM96.
Edit2: Maybe something to do with devices having over 2 input channels? The Tascam has 4 in, right? Multimix8 has 10.

Thanks a lot, Metal Priest!
Garage Band Input/Output with the Tascam us144 mkII works just fine!
I hope there will be an update for Reaper to fix the problem.
Another Question: Should I use the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Reaper with Mountain Lion? There is no info on that on the download page.

hey i have the tascam us-144 and running mountain lion as well on my 09 iMac. never opened reaper til today and tried to edit a song but playback stuck at buffer(having built in output worked) it crash my mac and rebooted. so what i did instead was install soundflower and route my tascam on soundflower and have reaper use that as the device which worked like a charm.

TASCAM US 144 don't runs with Reaper 10.8 (ML)
As I wrote in my object, today I have seen that my Tascam US 144 (regularly updated to ML) don't runs with my Reaper 4.30
The strange thing is: if I open a Menu on Reaper ... oh my goosh .. Tascam runs !!!
If not open a menu Tascam is stopped or go with clicks.
What happens Dear my Friends ?
I have a MBP (2011) 2,4 GHz, Intel Core i5
Tascam runs with MixBus for example, but not with REAPER !!!!
Reaper runs with the Built in Outputs .... NO WITH TASCAM !!!!
I am angry ...
:-(

start soundflower, you will have the little flower in your upper bar...clic on it and choose tascam into the "2-chnls" section.
Open reaper, go to options-device and choose soundflower as device.
Clic play, enjoy your tascam with reaper

Where is the Firmware update?
Hi,
I saw a post in here that mentioned they were at firmware version 2.03 and were using a Mac (2.03 is required for Mountain Lion on a Mac). But, I can't find it for use with a Mac. Here's the firmware download page:
http://tascam.com/product/us-144mkii/downloads/
Bdaaah!
Any help is appreciated...

That's pretty much impossible, otherwise a lot more posts about the issue would flood the forums and support address. All other interfaces seem to be fine though, maybe your specific interfaces share a chip or other component that's causing the issue. Did you guys contact Tascam support about the issue?

Has anyone downgraded the firmware? Just curious
As you know all developers were forced by Apple to use a new SDK for OS X Lion ( requirement) as it uses a very big updated SDK and many developers are having issues and bugs as they have to recode some of their work.
Can anyone downgrade the firmware on the Tascam?

Here, again ...
Until last months I used Tascam US-144 without any kind of problems with Reaper.
This since the update to 2.10 version on my MacBook Pro.
As You know, passed October, Tascam released a new firmware version updated to Mountain Lion 10.8 (a beta version and maybe the problem was this, I thinked so ... )
Reaper was updated to Lion and now is to ML.
I was thinking ... now Reaper and Tascam will be ok ..
No. Now Tascam is perfect with Pro Tools 10, with MixBus 2.2 in my MBP but not with Reaper.
So the problem is Reaper. Unfortunately.
If I use "Jack" as audio interface (it is a sw in bundle with MixBus) there is no problem.
Reaper and Tascam run well.
If I use Tascam only .. Tascam goes well only if i click on a Menu of Reaper !!!!
If not so ... Tascam is going step by step and clicks. A red blinking lamp appears on the counter.
So Please, I am asking to resolve this problem to Reaper.
Thank You
I LOVE REPAPER (also if I use Pro Tools and MixBus too).
I bought the license to Reaper 5.0 in the last week ....

Yes, this looks to be the case. Alesis does provide their own drivers and firmware for the Multimix8 USB2.0FX but browsing through the driver files with a hex editor would seem to suggest that they're actually made by Ploytec GmbH. Quick googling reveals that Tascam devices do indeed use drivers from the same company.
What's curious is that opening a menu from the top menubar "fixes" the problem for as long as the menu stays open. It seems like some kind of race condition between threads, so I did two short runs on the Xcode profiler, one normally and the other with the menubar open. Here's the run with the menu closed and buffering problems:
Notice how much CPU time goes into the spinlock. Now compare it to the run with the menubar open:
Quite a lot less. As you can see, this occurs inside the audio driver ("AlesisUSB2Audio"). Here are the call trees from the main thread. First the run with menu closed and stuttering audio:
A lot of time goes into BlockUntilNextMatchingListInMode - compare to the run with the menu open and smooth playback:
Again - quite a lot less, because the main thread spends more time handling the menubar in _NSHandleCarbonMenuEvent.
Hopefully this information is of some use in finding the problem. Please let me know if you need more runs on the profiler or debugger - I'll be happy to help.

I posted in the compatibility thread about this too but just to say that I've started using Soundflower and that seems to work as a solution so I can now get Reaper 4.31 working with my Tascam US-1800 using Soundflower as a bridge.

Me too I use "Jack" as a bridge (it is in bundle with MixBus !) to get Tascam and Reaper working togheter ....
And also SoudFlower may be a "solution" ... yes, of coarse
But a serious solution is that REAPER find the solution to this issue.
Reaper Tech Team CAN resolve it if "He" want (i Think so).
So I will wait for a solution by Reaper Team.
Thanks Reaper

Re-Install v4.22 may help
I had the same problem: the US-122mk2 caused chaos when connected with Reaper after I updated to v4.261 and v4.31.
Today I re-installed v4.22 and my problems are gone: everything works fine again.
So it is definitely a problem in the Reaper-Code of v4.261 and v4.31.
I would really appreciate if the developers would review the source code differences between v4.22 (OK with US-122mk2) and the latest v4.31 (NOK with US-122mk2) to find the buggy part in v4.31 and fix it.
I still use:
OS X 10.7.5 with TASCAM_US-122MKII_US-144MKII_Driver_2.00
But maybe the v4.22 reinstall helps as well for OS X 10.8. (I will not test it since I'm happy that my setup is working fine again ;-) ).
Cheers

Would one or more of the adventurous among you guys care to try the latest 4.32 RC4 (please check this thread on pre-releases: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=22836 )? It contains a possible fix for the problem (Options->Preferences->Audio->Device->"Ignore running change notifications...". Please report any problems with that in the sticky RC4 thread in the pre-release forum. Thanks!
