I definitely miss the good old IRC days when db was the lone gunman. That said, I always felt it was only a matter of time, as REAPER starting getting more popular, that the old IRC development modus operandi would move on and expand with more developers being added to the team etc.

This is of course not the only method.
We could do it Logic Audio-style and have toolbar buttons at the top show and hide panels. A dynamically generated toolbar area could hold buttons for every panel in the docker. Click to show/hide. CTRL+click to solo/unsolo. Show and hide means that nothing of the hidden panels would remain but the buttons in that toolbar.
It would shift the use of screenspace for the status control of the panels away from the panels themselves, but it would probably use the same amount of screenspace.

Also remember the palette dock in Photoshop!
Each palette can be docked to any other pallete, and at the top we have the palette well which can hold an arbitrary amount of palettes. Such a great way to make your own workflow!

A built in pitch bend envelope (like the vol/pan envelopes for items) to control the pitch per time for items effectively...

I started using Reaper again yesterday - think I found a usable skin that doesn't make me want to kill myself!
But yeah... I support Brice's original concept entirely - every atom in my body says yes.
Just wondering though Brice... how far do you think you could get with the current skinning engine?

Can anyone describe the way After Effects and Photoshop handles this ? What about Maya or other 3D packages ?

At some point people may ask for a preference because they'll stack up three panels vertically, but that can happen when this system is already in place.
Important Note
All panels that line up along the complete docker window, in other words there is a vertical line from top to bottom for example, then the vertical minimize/expand control will affect all panels along that line.
All the other panels that touch that line will expand to use the space that was vacated and the panels whose control was used will of course contract. Expansion happens the same way.
An example of this is shown in the mockup above. The right-hand vertical line(top to bottom) is the one you should be looking out for. Touch a left-right control along that line and everything, along that line, will be affected.
Here's a mockup showing the areas that will act together if the appropriate controls are used.
To expand a panel, I suggest a double-click anywhere in the contracted area will open it back up.
That said, what do you think about double-clicking the tab area to contract/expand any area left/right and CTRL+double-click to contract/expand an area up/down ? We could do away with the controls all together that way, though some may find them great to have optionally.
The middle-mouse-button-double-click (or something configurable) could solo-expand that tab to the entire docker, as if you'd patiently contracted everything else in the docker, and then picked that particular tab if you hadn't already.

Here's how Photoshop CS2 does it - anything can go anywhere (1.8 MB GIF)!

Let's get a bunch of goals together. As WT cleverly stated, the Cockos team have their own best ways of achieving them, so we might as well state what we need.
I intend to put this in to an FR, just so it's more visible to the devs and in the system.
Goals
In General
Giving users the means to create custom layouts without the precision necessary when resizing and placing windows, by expanding the docker method with added flexiblity and easy controls for controlling the work area.
- Every window is a docker
This will enable setups with multiple tabs and/or panels of multi tabs across as many monitors as the user has. Plenty of folks use two monitors. Quite a few will use three. I use one for video display, one for the mixer and automation, and one for the arrangement/edit area at work. They're all 24" monitors, sometimes 22".
In some ways we already have multi-tab stuff even in the main arrangement via the project tabs.
- Every Docker can be split horizontally and vertically in to separate areas
Keeping your most important status displays, editing areas and media access methods(media explorer, bins, Windows explorer windows outside the docker window) handy without the clutter of window borders that take a lot of effort to place precisely, saves time.
- Each area can hold none to multiple views, in which one can be visible at a time
None, so no view is taken away from any existing area when creating a new area with a split.
- Views (stuff from the View menu) can be dragged to and from other areas and the View menu or some other list of possible views
- Areas can be hidden and shown again
Need some more space for that mixer, or media bin ?
- Areas can be take up the entire docker space temporarily
This may be called solo-view of an area. This means that an area holding multiple views can still access those views.
- The same view with different configurations can be used in multiple areas and dockers
Reasons for this are a clock on every screen, multiple bin views without the bottleneck of a single window to access multiple bins from, multiple areas of a larger mixer view, multiple arrangement/edit views and probably a whole lot more.
Okay, that should do it for layout management. Now what about the new views.
New Views- Media/Preset/other-setups Bins
Requested in the Bins and Media Bay issue.
This presents a plenty of possiblities of managing all kinds of plugin setttings, track settings, automation passes or areas thereof, media items, all independently of file systems, where audio items themselves will usually be referenced and everything else can be in the bins themselves.
- Track Inspector
- Item Inspector
No need for that non-modal dialog window.
- More flexible toolbar button views
Being able to rearrange to buttons and add column or row headers.
Ok, that's the first draft. Anyone have more suggestions for this ?

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of folk singing Brice's praises - can't believe how awesome those mockups are, and how much work must've gone into creating them! Also a big +1 on Airon's well thought-out suggestions - that GUI request deserves some love (votes)!
