Default Reaper crashing OSX Sierra AND High Sierra

These crashes have been happening since I initially installed Reaper on this machine. I cannot duplicate it on command, but it crashes my 2015 retina Macbook Pro 15" to a full reboot. Only occurs every hour or so with Reaper (version 5.7) open AND recording. Here is the recent crash log from macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, but it happened before the upgrade too:

What else can I provide to be helpful?

I can't really make up something strange in the crashreport.

Which audio interface do you use in Reaper ?

Do you only experience this in Reaper or also in other software ?

Never heard of the fact that Reaper can bring a mac system to its knees, so that a restart is required ...

I also use Reaper (5.71pre1-64bit) on a macbook retina 2015 , OSX 10.13.2.
It just flies and i totally do not experience any issue at all...

I typically record around 16-20 channels at a time of the 32 tracks set up in my project coming in from the X-USB out of a Behringer x32 Compact mixing desk.

I only ever have this happen while tracking with Reaper.

I DO however have multiple FX plugins running on multiple channels:
VST: ReaGate (Cockos)
VST: ReaComp (Cockos)
VST: ReaEQ (Cockos)
VST: TAL Reverb II Plugin (TAL-Togu Audio Line)
AU: AutoTune EVO (x86) (Antares)
JS: DeEsser
JS: Downward Expander

guess i should run it once without the fx on during tracking

First, try disabling only VST: TAL Reverb II Plugin and AU: AutoTune EVO (x86).

I can't imagine the other plugins (which are native to Reaper) bring your mac to it's knees.

if you could try to reproduce the same crash on the built-in Mac's soundcard, that would be valuable.
either you'd figure out this is a soundcard's issue, or you'll figure out this happens with every sound interface.

I have begun having this exact problem since upgrading to 5.7 64-bit. I had been using 32-bit and began running into memory problems so went to 64: the difference was that with 32-bit playback would start stuttering when RAM usage got up around or above 3GB, and then the program would freeze. I'd have to force quit and start over.

Since 64-bit, it just shuts down without warning. Playing one second, and the next the screen goes black and it begins to reboot. I get this message: "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."

It's happened about 6 times in the past 4-5 days since upgrading to 64-bit.

I'm going to do the latest upgrade to 10.13.4 (I'm on 10.13.3) and see if that makes a difference.

The crash and automatic restart is what a kernel panic does in OSX since 10.12. They got rid of the gray screen telling you to force quit and restart and just have the machine restart itself now.

Kernel panics are usually the result of some hardware mayhem. So I'd suspect the audio interface driver is maybe having issues with the newer OSX builds for my first guess.

Make damn sure you have a cloned backup of your system before ANY 10.13 update!!!
Make sure you don't have filevault errantly enabled! The 10.13 installer script has a box ticked by default to enable this and it's easy to miss. Not only a severe performance degrade but the .4 revision will brick your OSX install if you have filevault enabled and force you to re install.

If you do this, just to be safe, use the "combo" installer instead of the incremental update from Appstore.

Here is the Combo update from 10.13.3 to 10.13.4:

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1959?locale=en_US

Benefit from Combo update:
A Combo update will always install the osx core system files also.
So if you have maybe corrupt system files, they will be freshly new installed by the Combo update.

An incremental update from Appstore won't do this.

Yowsa! Thanks for this. I have not done the update: before updating, I did some research on update and found people reporting problems with dual screen monitors after the update, so I held off.

HOWEVER, I do have filevault enabled on this computer (actually, I don't need it on this computer, but on my other computers, which I use for work, all are filevault encrypted -- re: HIPAA compliance). I had not heard this before. You're saying filevault is not compatible with the upgrade at all?

I was also under the understanding that there was not a performance hit with the latest version of filevault, even when using it with a DAW. Is the wisdom of this forum suggesting otherwise? I'm hearing I should disenable filevault, at least on my DAW computer (which I really don't use for anything else)?

Excellent. I didn't know that. Thanks!

Have you done the upgrade? Would you suggest holding off?

Here's the thing. Filevault is disk encryption. This is security against physical access to a hard drive. (Understandable that it would be required for a drive containing medical records! That's a perfect use case.) This is used when data security against physical drive theft is the priority above anything else including performance. It may be possible to have more performance left when using this than in the past with a fast modern system and a SSD but it's still a performance killer. Also puts your data more at risk and pretty much would make recovery from a sick drive impossible.

This would be a mistake to use with an audio production system not in danger of having its hard drive stolen. Turns out the software updates can go south with this too! Seen a few of these now.
