I would say to leave the poll open from today (29th of July) to the next Friday (5th of August). Then if there are more people who voted yes then we can decide the rest of the competition.

P.S. The reason I said only Reaplugs and JS is that everyone starts from the same point. Not all of us have fancy plugins

Only Reaper plugins doesn't work for me If I want to mix. I use at least waves NLS inside Reaper.

Would it be possible for you to provide stems then?

I use rarely the reaper plugins so you wouldn't be the only one who had to change his habits just a bit. If you want to challenge yourself and maybe reevaluate the reaplugs , you're welcome

so use JS Saturation or Bad Bus Mojo instead. (and a white noise generator for the full Waves experiences  )

Slightly true lol only difference is you have 100 different types of white noise. I'll be honest here, I'm not good enough at mixing to enter any kind of contest. But this still sounds fun.

Nice one I wouldn't mind to stop using NLS for just one mix but NLS is more than saturation and noise it can be used as a brickwall limiter.

About Reaper plugins,
Oh man I'm new to Reaper but I used the Multiband compressor from the day I started using Reaper. The only thing which I found off is the Knee setting. No matter how much I tweak it, it doesn't sound the way I want it to sound. Other than that it is in my favourite list I also use EQ frequently. From my experience, those plugins are great and they will do the job done.

May I suggest this song to the poll. http://www.telefunken-elektroakustik...es-mic-summit/

Leave it open to any plugins anything goes. Then when a mix using only Reaper plugins beats the mix using UAD/Waves/$$$ stuff, you'll get to read some fun comments.

Then think it as a challenge on who can produce the best mix using only the reaper plugins! Aren't you curious about what could come out? I am because I use 99% of the time 3rd party plugins haha

Then it turns into a "let's do this with one hand ties behind our backs" kind of thing instead on someone approaching it doing their best with no limitations.

Don't read that as me stating my opinion on plugins.

There's certain to be an entry using only Reaper plugins that beats someones "throw the bank at it" approach to shake things up. Could be a positive thing for someone who watched too many youtube "tutorials" and is thinking "If only I could afford this plugin, my mixes would suddenly be so much better."

But that's the point! If we don't use the same plugins then there is no contest

Which indicates that it's not about the plugins. Which I know you already know

I kind of see the point but also don't see the point in only using certain plugins. All plugins are highly capable - it's down to you and your skill at the end of the day.

So everyone should install portable version to check what plugin is included? A lot of js plugins aren't bundled with Reaper, but you can download them from stash or other sites.

well, to check what you have then simply go to your fx browser. When you install reaper you can tick the options to install the js plugins.

I think you need to lay out more specifically what you mean. For example:

Do you mean that everybody gets the same song go mix? That would allow for fair comparisons, but not everybody is equally at home with a particular style of music or its post production requirements.

Or do you mean everybody supplies their own recordings to mix? In this case, it would be difficult in places to distinguish between qualities in the musicianship, the recording and the mixing ... and you'd need to be able to compare apples with oranges (e.g. classical music with rock with hip hop etc).

Sorry to sound negative, but these are examples of issues that need to be ironed out from the start.

Since you can select more than one I voted twice. The first time I selected my top 4. Then I voted again selecting my favorite.

Until 31st is loooong. I think one reason people lost interest was because it took too long between your first announcement and the contest itself. I had completely forgotten about it, and I'm lucky I looked at this thread 3 days before the end of the contest. I understand you were busy, but by being so long, you lost the dynamic of interest of the beginning.

I agree.

But, Dave, I want to include that I'm (I'm sure I speak for all that entered) really appreciative of the work you did setting this up in the first place. Like you said, this was kind of a beta run and learning experience. It would be nice if we could convince one of the forum moderators to help with the next one.

Also, maybe one thread to plan out the details and then a sticky announcing it once everything is in place so that it can all go smoothly and timely.

I know and it's a shame. I shouldn't have said anything before I really had time to do it. But it's also true that I hadn't ever organized something like this before, so the fact that it took so long was also because of my lack of experience.
Now I know EXACTLY what has to be improved and how to achieve it.

You said that until the 31st is long... How much time would you consider enough for each part of the contest (mixing and voting)?

Oh I know what I also did wrong. I had initially thought to let the "public" decide which song to mix. And it was just and bad idea.

A belated thank you to DaveKeehl for organizing all of this. It think its a fantastic idea that I think will be a valuable learning experience for a lot of us. In particular being able to dive into other sessions and learning from them.

Very happy to hear this will now be a monthly occurrence. Although my work schedule varies drastically, I'm happy to help out with future contests Dave if you can still use someone.

I think the best mix won, that is who I voted for. I did think my mix would do better in the rankings than it did, but thanks for the honorable mention from Indiscipline and Dave. Despite having added a decent amount of top end, it appears I still needed way more overall as it was too dull compared to the other mixes that ranked higher than mine.

Currently installing some musicals on a cruise ship and can't download the sessions on this meager wifi, but very much looking forward to diving into your guys' sessions when I get back to on land.
